in response to my question of what Gay Pride means;
NateSLC,
<< Did I say gays should be proud simply because they are gay? NO. Did I say that they are proud to be themselves just like everyone else? Yes. Did I say that the reason they feel they need to say it is because society tells them differently? Yes. There is justification for gays to say they are proud. It's stating a disagreement with society. >>
This is what I mean by society telling me different:
OK, (deep breath), maybe it's semantics or something, but I don't follow the use of the term PRIDE here. I'm trying.
I'm 40 years old, and I have heard the term slung around a lot during my lifetime.
Maybe I have been misled when I was taught that pride has to do with an achievement or accomplishment, and another of the 7 deadly sins in any other case.
I wouldn't ever ascribe the term pride to something I am that I didn't have an active part in, such as my race, gender, height, nationality, etc. etc. etc.
Nor would I ever apply pride to a commonality with others. What is there in that that I actually did?
I just don't get how a person would apply pride to being themselves. What is that? People are themselves regardless. I doubt I will ever be a person that was born and raised somewhere else.
Or, disagreeing with society? Is that an act that requires some special effort or talent, that you need to be patted and recognized for going above and beyond?
To me, it's seems more like the racial term of "Brown Pride" that I have seen some hispanics use. It ends up having a undermining discriminatory nature to it.
Doboji,
noone has made any concessions or attempts to understand the other side...
everything I ask is an attempt to understand the other side
nice try
next time just use your own self as the reference point
