Why on earth is NASCAR more popular than F-1?

In America, we are innudated with NASCAR, however, F-1 seem much cooler IMHO.
Inspired my Don-Vito's thread, I switched on Speedvision.
Got a question, how did Schumacher get injured and on my TV he is still racing? Replay?
Does Ferrari just dominate the series?
Is it because of Schumacher or Ferrari?

I think F-1 does have a better coolness factor going for it, but the sheer amounts of money pumped into it kind of distance the average joe from it. At least with NASCAR the cars pretend to be stock.

Nascar rules because rednecks breed more than everyone else. 😀

(i.e. the Nascar fanbase is growing at an exponential rate)

I am sure more money is pumped into NASCAR, but I could be wrong. And, like you said, someoen would have to be an idiot to think NASCAR has even a single stock screw on any of the cars.

I love F1 and hate Nascar. I guess a lot of people just like watching cars with solid axles and pushrod V-8s turn left. The only real beef people have with F1 that resonates with me is the lack of passing, which is largely due to the tight. technically challenging courses. I find NASCAR ponderous and boring, whereas F1 is like a delicate ballet - the cars are among the most complex, elegant landborne vehicles ever built, and the drivers are true athletes. Even the pit lane process is amazingly choreographed and impressive IMO.

There are two Schumachers, who are brothers. Michael is perhaps the greatest F1 driver in history, and owns or will own all major records for laps led, pole positions, victories, etc. Ralf, who was involved in that crash, is a little more of a mortal.

Ferrari has been quite dominant over the last several years, though they have certainly experienced ebb and flow over the years. Their dominance this season is the greatest they have had in some time, largely because McLaren and Williams, their traditional peers, have struggled greatly. Ferrari has the best-handling, most reliable cars, and they are at least competitive in top speed. Schumacher is certainly one of the all-time greatest drivers. It's a match made in heaven.

It sounds like Ralf is OK, thank God.

Like you, I tuned in to an F1 race a few years ago, almost by accident, and was seduced by it. It's an amazing sport IMO.

Yearly earnings

Michael Shumacher: $80 million
"Little E": $20 million (highest paid Neccar driver)

what??? more money into NASCAR!!! crazy..F-1 is uber expensive!! is just that there's no incentive to watch F-1 in the US. Americans are content with having their rednecks in NASCAR. F-1 is global though. In Europe and South America, all you have is F-1.

In terms of the cars themselves, I believe a NASCAR car costs somewhere between $50 - 100K to build, whereas an F1 car costs something like a million (not to mention the astronomical R&D costs, which are comparatively nonexistent in NASCAR).

Oh, yeah, he is the one the slept with Jordan.

Yeah, but DEI maust make 1 billion dollars a year.

F-1 has some popularity in the States. We had a race this weekend in Indy, there were tons of people in town for it.

Close but it cost a lot more then 50K to build a nascar CAR. Heck a good motor has to be at LEAST 10K if not maybe a LOT more.

I KINDA like nascar more as the rules keep each car very similiar and the race is one by the best pit team and driver. In F1 it seems the poeple that always wins are the ones that spend the most on their car. So it is more race of cars/money, then it is people.

EDIT Looks liek they cost around $250,000 for each car, give or take.

Ok the average yearly budget for an F-1 team is $300 million. Most of which goes into R&D.

Whoever said that Michael Schumacher gets $80 million a year I'd like to see an article or something, because I really doubt that. I'm not saying your wrong, because it could be very possible, but i'm kinda skeptical.

I loathe NASCAR. I find it revolting that they'd waste fuel on it. If you're gonna go in circles, do it with something cool (IRL or CART for instance). Also, don't bother with the "stock" car B.S. They are about as stock as a funny car (drag racing).

I remember reading an article where some guy criticized the editors of a magazine for making fun of NASCAR and pretty much only having coverage of Rally cars and F-1. He tried to say that the reason people relate to NASCAR is that they could build something similar. I don't know how he could say this when it would be easier to make a go-kart, which would be more similar to an F-1 car than any car he could build to resemble a NASCAR (in more than appearance).

The only reason that NASCAR is more popular is that there are more wrecks. Having 40+ cars fender to fender will obviously create more wrecks.

I love F-1, but realize it is kinda boring, especially when a team and a driver (Ferrari, Schuey) are dominating so much. At the very least people should be watching the IRL over NASCAR.

Just my 2 cents.

Hey, Xman, half the people who go to the US Grand Prix are from other countries.

Also, what happened to Ralph Schumacker? How bad is he hurt? I got to see the crash but now I'm at work and have missed the rest of the race.

Schumacher was born in Germany and lives in Sweden. Last year he made, according to Forbes Magazine, $80 million in salary, bonuses, prize money and endorsements. Only golfer Tiger Woods, at $80.3 million, topped him on the list of highest paid athletes.
