Why not skip some process nodes and jump ahead e.g. to 5 nm directly?

I think such general analogies to everyday life situations are quite pointless actually. We've already had several of them already, so can we please stop destroying the thread with more of them? Such meaningless general statements really are no technological proof of that it should not be possible to skip ahead a couple of process nodes.

Haha sorry, bad joke couldn't resist. But it seems like the answer is that Intel and GF is dependent on the rest of the industry researching the technologies and tools needed to get there. They just have the means of manufacturing.
