Here's what will work better:

1 DUI = License suspended for 1 year, 1 month prison or community service, $10,000 fine.

2nd DUI = Permanently revoked license with no chance to have it restored, you can never drive again. 1 year in jail. $25,000 fine.

3rd DUI = Executed

Any DUI where you cause the death of someone else = executed

People will think much harder about doing stupid shit when the punishment is more appropriate for the crime.

Punitive legislation has never prevented anything because its reactive. try again.

In your example 3 cars filled with families could have been mangled in accidents before the DUI guy is executed. Great system.

Only if it was a four car pile up...

I think this thread like DUI law is about punishing people that can have fun more than punishing people that make bad decisions. I am thinking those most vocal in punishing have made tons of bad decisions and have a vendetta.

if you have no way of knowing what your actual BAC is...how would one know for sure that they haven't?

Spoken like a true alcoholic. It's pretty easy to tell you have never been driving drunk if you don't drink and get behind the wheel. I don't need a blower in my car in order to confirm I haven't been drinking.

I drink. Never drink and drive. Most I have ever driven with was 1 drink. Anything more and I feel uncomfortable.

I am the same way. I will never get behind the wheel after drinking. It's really easy to plan ahead, so there's no excuse for driving while intoxicated. And I don't care how intoxicated I am, my judgement would never so impaired that I would think getting behind the wheel drunk would be OK. It's a moral basic... It's not going to change because I'm drinking.

The laws were never intended to stop someone drinking responsibly and then driving. They are becoming that way out of fear, intolerance, and the insane revenue it generates. Millions are arrested for this and only several thousand affected.

Still I prefer to err on the side of caution. Like I said it's easy to plan ahead. At the end of the day though the issue isn't with people having 1-2 beers and getting behind the wheel. It's the stupid people who get totally loaded and think they are somehow special and capable of driving. Either that or they just have no respect for other people on the road. People like that will do whatever it takes to get around a blow-and-go type device anyway.

But the other 100% of the population does. When you invite friends over to watch the football game, they don't walk to your house do they??

Generally when I have friends over drinking they spend the night. Anyone who doesn't intend to stay the night is either taken home by a designated driver, or takes a cab. Like I said it's easy to plan ahead. There's no excuse for drinking and driving.

Umm... because of 90% of the population who knows not to drink and drive doesn't like to have their civil rights trampled on because the other 10% are idiots?

I'll bet that you're one of those people who want to ban firearm ownership every time there is a school shooting, aren't you?

1 in 5 drivers on the road on the weekend after 10pm have been drinking. So your 90% stat is really high. 1 million DUI arrests per year. For every arrest how many weren't caught?

furthermore unlike guns, driving isn't a right never has been and never will be.

If someone wants to drive, they're going to drive. It's an easy system to cheat so it's kind of pointless to make them mandatory.

Sounds like a made up statistic, can you please quote where you found these statistics? Also, when you say drinking, do you mean over the legal BAC level? Because one beer doesn't mean over the BAC but it still technically counts as 'drinking'.

Stupid idea is still a stupid idea.

Sounds about right. They're pretty easy to spot too. They drive below the speed limit and they have a really hard time going in a straight line. They move in a zig zag sort of pattern but stay in their lane while doing it.

New rule: mandatory death penalty if you are more than 2x the legal limit.

People will lol at you for making a victimless crime require the death penalty.

Ok well I recently had to take an operator retraining course because I got 2 moving infractions in 2 years. this 4 hour course covered driving under the influence and these were the facts presented in the material authorized by the state of CT conducted by the The National Safety Council

and the million arrests per year is from:
duiinformation.org/duiarrestinformation.html

It doesn't matter if you are over the legal limit because your driving is impacted immediately and you can be arrested at .04 or .06 or whatever if it is impacting your ability to operate.

The new technology is multiple sensors both breath and touch that isn't easy to cheat at all. try again.
