Why, Mom, Why?!

I minimized my web browser this evening to my horror.

What's wrong with this picture? Oh, I know!

AAAAAAAH!!! KILL IT WITH FIRE!!!! Why put this rubbish on my brand-new 2500k-powered gaming rig?

Yeah, yeah, CSB, whatever.
Do you guys have any stories of family members putting horrendous software on your computers?

Ah, well my mom paid for half of mine. So, she gets to do with it what she wants.

why share account, especially admin account? create a restricted account for her

Also, how do you think I know that you're a pirate?

She probably thought she was doing you a favor when Java asked to update. Of course, like 90% of the people out there, she didn't bother unchecking the "recommended" software junk that Java updates tend to bring in.

You should try Norton instead, has caused zero interference in the past few years.

Just slow as crap. Oh, and it's "smart" firewall did prevent Firefox from working on a friend's computer even though it was whitelisted and everything.

Is Comodo any good?

Maybe she figures that since she paid half, it's half hers, (and if you're under 18, the computer belongs to her) and since, based on your desktop, (if she has any google-fu) she figured out that you download material from questionable sites...and she wants to protect her "investment."

It prabably came with the automated adobe flash update and she didn't know to uncheck the box before hitting "next."

Limited user accounts FTW.

Nah, I don't do any "questionable" downloads. I only get 6GB/Month, ZunePass fulfills all of my music needs and the local library and Redbox fulfill my movie needs. 🙂

Anyway, I just uninstalled it and installed MalwareBytes.
She didn't mind, as she didn't pay anything for McAfee.

i use to let them use my computer but once i moved from XP, i was done, gave them all their owen laptop, dad uses gateway fx and got my sisters their own MBP, and now if it's broken you'll have to wait till i fix it (which is always next day) but they can't use mine.

I would save up money asap and pay your mom back her half for the sake of your own privacy. I couldn't imagine having to share a computer.

Or at least do separate logins.

I would like to do that. Once I fix up a few people's computers (I'm putting out some local PC repair ads) I'll build her a cheap-ass AMD fusion or Celeron-based rig (That would be more than she put in) so she has something that she can check her e-mail on, etc. She doesn't use the computer for anything that would warrant more than an average dual-core CPU with integrated graphics, 4GB of RAM and a 500GB hard drive.
