why is the discover card not accepted in so many places?

Discover charges higher transaction fees. I use both Visa & Discover, Discover has very good customer service and the online system is better. The citibank visa I have also has good customer service, I just have it for the HHonors points and the fact that everyone takes visa.

Not many places around hee that dont take discover, in fact I think more dont take AE.

The main reasons for not being as widely accepted are that it was a latecomer to the party by several decades and was issued by Sears rather than in partnership with various banks.

the fees are apparently ridiculous to the retailer.....which is why they can offer such great kickbacks to consumers who use them....which more people want it, so retailers feel the push to accept them.......and the cycle continues, discover wins!

Discover is in fact cheapest to accepted by merchants.

I own a restaurant, so I know what I am talking about.
Discover Charges about 2%, Visa and Mastercard at 2.75% and AMEX at 3.5%

The reason Discover is not widely accepted is That VISA and MASTERCARD colluded to use their monopoly power to ban local banks from processing Discover card transactions. But their actions was found in 2004 for violating Anti-trust law

GOOD NEWS is recently Discover signed with over 95% of all local banks to accept Discover. Within anther 12 months, every places are now accepting VISA and MASTERCARD will accept DISCOVER also.

The best thing about Discover Card is ShopDiscover at Discover.com.

I have a Discover card, and I now buy just about everything online thru ShopDiscover, where I can get 5%, 10% and 20% off some websites, like Target, Walmart, Overstock, Cruiseliner, etc.
