I have watched SNL, here and there, since about 1979. I have rarely ever found anything on it funny, other than the political humor, and especially the political impressions. Not all of that is even funny, but the non-political humor has virtually always been lame.
Yeah as a teen I used to occasionally catch parts of one episode and even during the Rob Schneider, Dana Carvey, Phil Hartman, Mike Meyers years they were never that funny.
And throughout their history I'd have to say maybe one sketch every two weeks is chuckle worthy.
I know this cuz I made a real attempt to watch the early seasons when they were made available online. Mostly garbage. Chevy Chase was genuinely good but he only got like 1 season and 3 episodes. John Belushi is ok but very overrated.
I think most of their audience just likes the consistency, the comfort of knowing its always there. Comedians like it because it can launch their careers, or they can scout new talent.

SNL is crapola. There is no demand for crapola.
No its not.

SNL is still able to pull in great hosts which leads to some classic episodes(Christopher Walken and more cowbell). I consider the below Adam Driver skit to be one of those.

Oh man, you made me remember The Continental. Yea, some of the later stuff was quite funny.

Speaking of continental...

Key and peel was another great sketch comedy show.

Oh and more recent but great SNL skit. Liev held his composure better than most during the Van Damme split part of the bit. He did have to hide behind Kate for a second though. If you can crack Ray Donovan it's good comedy.

Living colour was pretty revolutionary when aired. Round that time Arsenio was on as well so good times. At least in that little place in history.
I could never get into MadTv. It always struck me as they were trying a wee bit too hard to be edgy as if they sprinkled cocaine on the scripts. Couple of good skits though. However I never watched a full show so maybe just caught it at awkward times channel surfing.

Well, most of the cocaine did come from Artie Lange on that set.

I feel the same way about the bachelor and real housewives and the Kardashians. Clearly the market gives zero shits what I think.

I feel the same way about automobiles, mobile phones, twitter, facebook, credit-cards, music-streaming, all competitive professional sports, and all reality TV and all soap operas (other than The Walking Dead - which, to be fair, though it is clearly as George Romero described it "a soap opera with zombies", is far less bleak and depressing than typical UK soaps like Eastenders).

But we live in a world dominated by the tyranny of the market, which is just another version of the tyranny of the majority. If enough people choose to consume something, everyone else gets it imposed on them. As with mobile phones and the car, it can even become compulsory as the world arranges itself on the assumption that everyone has one.

Also Def Comedy Jam.. Some good ass TV back then now that I think about it. I used to be up at midnight laughing my ass off and annoying the crap out of my dad. Agree on the MadTV point. Definitely a try hard version of In Living Color. Can you imagine In Living Color airing today with Handicap man and all.. lol (one of my fav. skits too).

Because Phoebe Bridgers was on last night and that's all that matters.

I still get her name confused with Phoebe Waller Bridge (she hosted last year.) Both are geniuses named Phoebe I guess...working in very different genres though.

-MadTV at its best was incredibly funny. It had a couple season run with it's golden cast (Will Sasso/Pat Kilbane/ Alex Bornstein/Phil Lamar/etc) but unfortunately lost the chemistry at some point and folded back in on itelf with overused self referential humor (i.e the Stuart character was funny in a buzzard way once or twice, but then the joke got old and strung out and they just kept going with it well past it's expiration date).

At its height it was peak sketch comedy though.
