Why is SNL Still a Thing?

Newsweek is one of my GoTo sources and I generally like their content. Seems to be largely unbiased. They have a bad habit of interjecting ads as stories which bothers me somewhat, but so far it's been limited to some silly game console that I can easily ignore.

But they're on this SNL kick. SNL hasn't been a thing since Chase and Curtin left, so what's the deal?

Also- Chase was never that funny imho...he was "okay" in Fletch but the movie(s) role was made for him, basically. Nat lampoon peaked with xmas vacay, but he didn't 'make the movie' what it was. Three Amigos or Caddyshack? He was replaceable.

Edit: besides the first 5 years with the original cast, and maybe 5ish years in the early 90s (Farley and crew time), I actually enjoyed MadTV and In Living Colour as much or more than SNL. They were laugh-worthy more often.

I am really getting tired of people asking stupid questions.

Learn what this is:

and stop saying you understand supply & demand.

You dont.

You clearly fucking dont.

If you understood supply and demand you wouldnt fucking ask why things still exist.

Living colour was pretty revolutionary when aired. Round that time Arsenio was on as well so good times. At least in that little place in history.
I could never get into MadTv. It always struck me as they were trying a wee bit too hard to be edgy as if they sprinkled cocaine on the scripts. Couple of good skits though. However I never watched a full show so maybe just caught it at awkward times channel surfing.

I somewhat agree with the op. It can be irritating when the mainstream news, which is suppose to be taken seriously, when they run clips of some SNL skit that aired the night or two nights beforeL. Morning Joe does this a lot and so do other MSNBC shows as well as does CNN. Mainstream news often run their "feel good" stories like the bond between a handicapped child and her squirrel, or some old woman shut-in and her neighbors painting her house for free, or the dog that saved the family from COvid (I never did understand that one), but running SNL clips during the news which are usually about dopy Donald Trump just seems like the news media do not take their business seriously. Could that explain why Trump calls them fake-news??? However, as weird as everything is today in the world, maybe the nightly news should be hosted by Chevy Chase. Chevy Chase and Dan Aykroyd.

SNL is crapola. There is no demand for crapola.
Seems like toddler foot-stomping time? Just because YOU don't demand it, doesn't mean nobody else does. Demand is not singular.
"I don't like SNL so nobody else does/should either. Why is it still on?" - summary

SNL is best enjoyed on YouTube where you can skip the skits that aren't landing. When you consider the fast writing and minimal rehearsal, SNL is really fun to watch. Cast is always hit or miss....as are the jokes...and the guest host's ability to act. It's still fun to catch the skits that are well written and executed.

I like a lot of the stuff from The Kids in the Hall and the Whitest Kids You Know. Just funny seeing the messed up stuff they come up with.

I watch news. I watch mainstream news.
Morning Joe is not news.
It's an entertainment program that specializes on political commentary.

I thought this was the most hilarious thing ever when it aired.

SNL is still a thing.
Some sketches are funny. some sketches suck. Just like it was during the 70's 80' and 90's.
Weekend Update is entertaining and pretty reliable.
Nobody gives a shit about 40 year old sketches anymore.

exactly. It's been as good as it always has been: meaning people will prefer their own individual eras, and hate others. It has never changed. The only time it was universally "bad" was actually when Eddie Murphy was on, and was also probably the single best individual to ever come out of the show, because he was basically in charge for the year+ that Lorne was exiled, and single-handedly saved that show from extinction. (there were other great cast members and moments then: Christopher Guest, Martin Short, JLD, but Murphy was unquestionably "the Answer" for so long.) He even hosted--I think more than once--as a cast member. Embersol was a complete joke.

Anyway, all eras have been as great or as bad as any other. If you don't get that, then you aren't paying attention.

Current Weekend Update is as good as it as ever been. Che and Jost are awesome.

There have definitely been good casts since Chase and Curtin left. Did you not like Farley and Spade? The Jeopardy skits were better than anything Chase and Curtin did in my opinion. I think Kate McKinnon who is a current cast member is funny as hell.

Have you seen any of these skits by her?

SCTV was awesome. Speaking of which Dan Levy hosted SNL last night. I might have to check that episode out.

I will say it was actually a very weak episode...weakest I've seen this last season. ...I think because more than half the sketches that aired were about the superbowl, which is pretty dumb. The cold open was really bad.

all that being said...Chloe Fineman doesn't get enough air time. She's completely brilliant, amazing impressions and characters, but she rarely appears in sketches. Pretty much have to find her on Youtube to see how good she is.

Thanks I will check her out. There are a few funny folks on the current cast. Kenan Thompson has a ton of funny skits like the one below.

3 Amigo's. The only thing funny to me in that movie was the singing Xmas tree site gag. Also, the first appearance I saw of Chevy Chase was a skit on PBS, that ended up being part of the Groove Tube movie. The Dealers... working in a lonely city... they work all day.... they work all day.........

Thanks for reminding me about MadTV. The Kenny Rogers (R.I.P.) skits were a stand out for me.
