What Moonbeam says is true. I have 2 sisters who would be considered prettier than me, because they have faces that are more symmetrical and fit that ideal. My face is a little crooked and could be described as having more 'character'. This used to piss me off because in fairy tales, the youngest daughter is always the prettiest! When people meet me after meeting my sisters, they are disappointed. Even Mr Isla was a little let down when he met me, because he had already met one of my sisters and expected more from me. He told me so, and it nearly crushed me.

My middle sister put it like this: The oldest has beauty like a rose, but it is a common, garden variety rose. She described me as "a beautiful flower from another planet". She didn't realize it at the time, but that was one of the best things she could have ever said to me. It has helped me embrace my uniqueness and individuality rather than lament the fact that I do not have that 'perfectness' my sisters have.

It's an ongoing, self-fulfilling prophecy. I will venture to guess that every culture has a sense of beauty. Children are taught what is pretty and what is not, and learn that people like those who are pretty. Also, most people are easily influenced and don't want to be excluded from the group almost by nature, because there are almost no positives in being alone on a civilization that is based on community; thus people follow what is in or cool, and this is usually superficial.
