i'm running win2k on a 700mhz duron. I'm running my cable modem via usb (as opposed to ethernet). My cable modem (toshiba 2000u)causes a lot of problems in reference to lockups/suuuuper slow idling after the modem crashes and other similar instances . Lately, my computer's cpu usage has been @ 99-100% with "system idle process" taking up all my cpu power. Occasionally, i get "services" taking up my cpu power. What's going on? Switching to ethernet isn't an option at the moment, but will eventually.

and all this time I thought you were intelligent...

Look up the definition of "idle".

Then, click the "performance" tab in the task anager to see actual CPU usage.

The system idle process @ 99% means your only using 1% of the CPU

i'll be multitasking when this occurs. I'll probably have winamp running, browsing web pages via IE, have trillian running, and might have a small game running in the background. By no means am i "idling" when this happens.

edit: my actual CPU usage when this happens is still 100%, as well as the idle CPU usage. My system bogs down sooo slow that there is about a 20 second lag time from clicking something before i see a context menu.

I'm going to give the easy answer: reformat and reinstall.

BTW, I have a box full of PCI NICs if you want one....

512MB seems more than enough.. i have a duron 800 running win2k pro and never encounter any real slowdowns.. might want to consider checking what services/programs are set to load on startup.. i use a program called Startup Control Panel to regulate my startup programs.. :)

Have you checked for virii lately? Run Ad-aware to make sure no spyware happens to be running in the background?

(I don't know if you know what System Idle Process is; I can't tell if you figured out what it is from your other posts, but, it means that your computer isn't doing anything...)

i understand this...which is what makes this problem so confusing. Tonight, for example, i was typing in word and playing some songs in winamp with windows task manager in the background. All of a sudden, my computer has a 20 second lag and when i can finally load up the task manager, it shows that either "services" or "system idle" is taking up 99-100% of my cpu usage. I get serious lag...and i have to wait about 10 minutes before it stops whoring my cpu. Then it does it again in about another hour.

What percent fragmentation is your hard disk? It is probably just your hard drive spinning back up.

There are some progs and virus that pause when taskmanager is opened, so it looks like normal.

i don't know what's causing the lag but i am pretty sure it will go away once you format and reinstall.

If your boot partition is close to full, there'll be noticeable loss in performance as well. I had a VPN client go nuts on me and it'd just take up all the memory.... Make sure you don't have some rogue app taking up your mem. There was a page with 300 pictures of girls kissing, and I remember it took up quite a bit of memory. I opened up 4 browsers pointing to that page to see what happens, and I got a warning, and the machine was noticeably slower. Make sure you're not doing that....
