Why is mob glorified?

I hate the mob, but I like a lot of the mob movies.
Scarface, Angels with Dirty Faces, Departed & Infernal Affairs, Godfather etc ....

Films with James Cagney and Humphrey Bogart get extra points, as they were both incredible actors, with Cagney being the most awesome gangster actor of all time IMO.
 
would these shows and this romantic notion of the gangster be perceived differently if it were black guys doing the same thing?

then it would be a 'gang' instead of 'mafia' and there would be sweet, sweet outrage.

American Gangster was a very successful film if iirc
