I hate mob movies. You guys realize mobs kills, extorts, blackmails, is racist (cant be made unless Italian), doesn't pay taxes and are scum, right? Just wonder why so loved? e.g. godfather, sopranos etc
 
Because it's interesting, and I find the clanish nature of traditional Italians admirable. It's the same thing with pirates. They were just highwaymen of the seas, but everybody likes pirates.
 
The Sopranos definitely doesn't glamorize it. I thought almost every character in the show was a piece of shit by the end of the series.

It's the allure of Power. Money and Women come with it...but that's all the result of Power.
 
People like the Mob because it almost operates as it's own separate entity. It represents the ideal of power without a restraining moral force. It's the ability to do whatever you want whenever you want and tell everyone else to screw off. At least that's what I see in it.
 
Interesting. No it wasn't obvious I have no desire for power I like to fish and run that's pretty much it.

Or all the Mafia sims they have now. e.g. Facebook games

The one that got under my skin was the Growing Up Gotti show. Someone should have followed those spoiled narcissistic kids around where ever they went in public and asked them "Do you know your cars/clothes/bling were purchased with blood money?"

They should have found some of the families that Gotti destroyed and had their relatives confront those kids where ever they went.
 
People like to fantasize about woman, power and money. Nothing wrong with it.

Now my 9 years old grand son want's to be a gangster when he grows up. Me and my wife have been trying to dissuade him and we encourage him to get an education and get rich.

I hope he grows out of it.

That's pretty much how the Japanese Yakuza operates. They see themselves as a medium between civil disputes and the law and serve to operate in between. They are actually corporate entities with their hands in pretty much everything, from innocuous industries like the finances and adult video to constructions. Some of the members even carry business cards.

- Mob doesn't typically kill someone that isn't dirty
- The government arguably extorts its citizens whenever possible
- Blackmail I can go either way on. You typically only get blackmailed if you were caught doing something dirty
- Rascist...is not the same as being exclusive. There are traditions that should be kept. Is it rascist for an asian family to arrange a marriage for there child with another asian family?
- Doesn't pay taxes....Most people cheat on there taxes, including many of our elected officials. But realistically for every dollar they make on the black market they are probably paying taxes on another dollar earned through legitimate enterprise.
- Scum......again depends on your interpretation. They have morals and principals. Some may say that in itself makes them better than most humans who don't live by any code.

would these shows and this romantic notion of the gangster be perceived differently if it were black guys doing the same thing?

then it would be a 'gang' instead of 'mafia' and there would be sweet, sweet outrage.
