Basically, time=money. Once you become an adult this ratio is more important. I would say more about your daftness but I'm in a good mood.
I understand this, BUT, I have gone the opposite way. I don't want fast and cheap. I want quality over all else.
I stopped buying pre-packaged food, beer, coffee, etc. I now make from hand as much as reasonably possible. I find higher quality, satisfaction, and a cost savings (after a upfront investment).
I could buy pasta sauce from the store and dried noodles, but I enjoy the food much more when I make the pasta sauce from scratch and make home made noodles. Plus, it's a lot cheaper (I can make 6 quarts of sauce to freeze for the cost of 1 jar of store sauce). I don't buy expensive microbrew (well, I do when exploring new styles), I make high quality beer. I used to buy 6 beers for $10.00. Now I make 48-52 beers for $26.00.
The side effect of making your own food, growing your own vegetables, brewing your own beer, grinding your own coffee, etc is more than just cost and quality. I have also lost weight. This is because I have to plan and prepare my meals. I can't run to the store and buy packaged pasta and make a quick meal. I need to prepare, plan, and make time for good food. This means taking a 'cook' day each week for the time consuming stuff (bread, sauce, soups, chili, etc). I also now eat more left overs (as sandwiches and in salads), and most importantly I spend more time with my wife as we both work together on this endeavor.
Burger and fries is a lot less common when you have to grind meat and cut potatoes. Pasta is even less when you have to roll out your own dough. I find it much more satisfying to spend time on making quality and doing something "hands on and old fashioned" then I do just running to super target and grabbing a starbucks and frozen pizza. If it was possible, I'd make everything I use in day to day life, but for now I'll settle for beer, bread, pasta, sauces, soups, and growing/canning my own veggies.
