Purdue is not one of the best college football programs in Division 1-A.

When I think of the best college football programs, I think of:

Michigan
Oklahoma
Texas
Florida State
Ohio State

This is Purdue's record by year. Defintely not "great".

Come on, Michigan overtook Notre Dame for number one in Division One this year and Texas is in the top five.

Yeah, and Notre Dame SUCKS this year. I saw how they played and anyone could overtake whatever "records" they possess.

Back on topic...

Before 1960, few teams sported names on jerseys. That began to change in the ?60s, perhaps because coaches were looking for a tool that made recruits feel more special.

"The first time I got here and we did picture day and a jersey is sitting in a locker and it has a 55 and ?Mangold? on the back, I was blown away for the rest of the day," Mangold said.

One school that refuses to name names is Penn State, where coach Joe Paterno has turned minimalism into an art form.

"I grew up being a New York Giants fan . . . and they had the plain blue jerseys," Paterno said. "And my high-school coach used to take me to Yankees games, and every Yankee on that field had polished shoes. And the Giants had no names on the backs and it stuck in my head, and I said, ?When I get to be head coach, that?s the way I like it.?

"So I told our guys, ?Let?s be unique. Let?s be different. We?re a team.? So we polish our shoes before every game and we took the names off the backs."

Other "throwback" schools include Notre Dame and Southern Cal. Fans of those programs wouldn?t dare suggest changing tradition. Smith, meanwhile, changed things around at Michigan State and heard about it.

The answers are many, Tradition, team unity, minimalism.

It might take a while in total wins, but winning percentage isn't too far out of reach.

I go to Purdue, and I'm glad to see a fellow Purdue Football fan...but please stop posting and making it seem as if all Purdue fans are retards. Go to purduesports.com and look in the archives. Those numbers are not made up.

Well, lets see. From your posts, you obviously don't care about previous accomplishments so lets take a look at Purdue's record this year.

They go 7 - 5 for the year, losing to #20 Arizona State in the Sun Bowl to wrap up their stellar 2004 performance and finish the year not even ranked. That's an impressive best football program I'm sure any coach and any team would love to have. :disgust:

I'd say Auburn and Alabama are in the Top 15 of all time. Like it was said earlier, some coaches like the idea of it being a "team" and thus individual players don't have their names listed on their uniforms. It doesn't bother me either way, but I do prefer the names.
