No, I disagree. If there aren't many of who I describe, why do like several million watch that kind of trash on TV and listen to corrupt music? Your reasoning is flawed - severely

Stuff YOU consider 'trash' or 'corrupt'. Last time I checked, this is a free country and the very ability to DISagree about the merits of something are what makes it such a great place to live. If I want to listen to the sound of someone farting into a mike for two hours, I CAN, no matter what anyone else says about it. I'd much rather have that then someone telling me what quality is. Who determines what's good and what's bad? You? You'll forgive me if I don't look forward to that day and time.

No offense, but you're really showing your age in this thead, mate. You're cripplingly naive and I think you need to do some growing up before casting denouncements on people who don't agree with you or do things you think are wrong.

I disagree once again. You fail to see my point. Those shows have no value behind them - they give no substance. They are essentially worthless. That's all I mean by "trash".

edit: yes, I know then MOST TV is trash. I watch some of that trash myself, I never said I didn't. I also gave tons of indications that I was no exception from what I was bitching about, so I no longer consider this a moot point.

The next generation will turn out whichever way the parents choose to raise their children. And, based on your observations, YOUR generation hasn't done a very good job.

I don't consider myself to be average, so I'm not part of that "generation" of morons.

Riiiiight.....of course you don't.

You do realize that every generation is smarter than the one before it, right? More people get an education, the number of college graduates goes up, the per capita income goes up, life expectancy goes up, etc. etc.

The the old line about all older generations think the new generation is the worst ever is true. When I think about the crap TV I grew up with in the 70s, I remember a lot of stupid jokes and characters - whether it was the dumb blonde or housewife or the flummuxed 'negro.' That type of character has been around for a long time, only the person has changed with the times. Polish jokes were the big thing in elementary school, then they became the blonde jokes of the 80s!

Even so, the shows that WarmandSCSI mentions really do make it seem we're willfully creating the second decline of western civilization. As Einstein quipped, genious has its limits, stupidity doesn't.

No, I'm not failing to see your point. You're failing to see beyond your own preconception. YOU think they're worthless, but your opinion is not the be all end all of opinions. There are as many opinions as there are arseholes.

The problem is, people probably thought that Welcome Back Kotter was the downfall of modern society back when it was on-air.

Today, that show has been replaced with The Bachelor. To me, there's really no difference. They're both stupid and entertaining.

Yes, but that does not mean we're any less corrupt... that's all my point is.

Less corrupt than what? What is your basis for comparison? If you're going to make blanket statements you need to back them up with facts! Can you? I can with the ones that I cited. Or have you not reached that yet in high school?

No, no man. Look I have nothing against you. Everything you say is valid. All I'm saying is that it has no educational value and thus contributes NOTHING to us :p that's all </argument>

edit: well, it does contribute entertainment to some ;) sorry

Dude, settle. I don't think nor do I care if you have anything against me. Obviously they DO contribute something to society as they are uber-popular. I may detest them as a plague, but they are still serving a purpose. Besides, like all new fads, they will eventually reach a saturation point and start to disappear. They're only very popular becuase they're relatively new and somewhat original. Give it time, they'll disappear.

Heh....

What others have said. :p

Whats wrong with American Idol, anyway? It's not in any way trashy or garbage like those "reality" dating shows. Same thing with Survivor. It's an awesome take on the gameshow, there's nothing stupid or trashy about it.

Chill out, man. Just because I made a statement you might not agree with (my opinion) doesn't mean I'm required to give a mountain-sized pile of facts to back it up.

I think you're projecting. You keep telling me to calm down, but I'm perfectly calm and rational. You're expressing an opinion and asking for people's thoughts on said opinions, as well as trying to sway others to your opinion (one would surmise or else why would you have posted?). I'm merely asking you to back up your opinion. You don't have to, but if you expect me to take it seriously, then there should be something more to it than 'because that's what I think'. You're certainly entitiled to think what you will, but so am I.

Cheers, mate.

It's insanely hard to tell emotion through text... just thought it was a hostile-toned comment (assumed, rather). And I made an ass out of myself :p

Cheers

Maybe stupid is the new Cool. Like people who wear baseball caps, what is it this week, upside down and backwards.

As to the stupids tv shows, after working all day most people don't really want to think and you need to program for the lowest common denominator...
