Why is it that people think stupid = funny?

It seems that the latest batch of American children (most of them) believe that stupid = funny. They've (well, I'm included in this generation) been raised on influences such as, making fun of the retarded, acting stupid to get attention, being sarcastic to get attention, etc. Probably most of it was because of TV influence - half the sh1t on the tube is worthless, corrupt garbage (just look at the "reality" shows now a day - the "Survivor"s and the "American Idols" and now the dating shows - a bunch of feces designed for this mindless generation of morons). Now MOST of us here are on the low end of this stupid spectrum (as in we resist most of this trash), but what do you think the next generation is going to turn out like???

</rant>

I have a perfect example (I'm not going to bash Wduaqnug, so I'm using another person): My Speakers Is Aweomsse Man

And to append to this rant:

My reasoning is that thinking stupidity/ignorance is a light-hearted issue is bad (mmkay?). It causes us to fail miserably in life. Now, as you guys probably know, I like a good time and always enjoy humor, but this is just beyond my tastes.

Just my opinion - don't flame me for it.

Dude, EVERY generation has been 'worse' than the one before. It's the nature of the beast that elders will at some point forget what it's like to be young and will lament the eventual downfall of the human condition. Go read some books on classical Rome or ancient China; they're littered with quotes amounting to roughly the same thing. Trust in humanity to be both greater than you can imagine and more horrible, and realize that that's what makes life interesting. Yes, YOU may think these things you're citing are ridiculous, and I would agree with you to some extent, but don't castigate and deride those who don't follow your line of thinking.

There are plenty of people who enjoy reality shows (using your example) who are dumb as bricks and couldn't lift their own arms if they weren't attached, but there are just as many who are brilliant and watch the shows simply for their entertainment values. In summation, settle down, realize there's both bad and good in just about everything, and realize also that every generation since the dawn of time has been disappointed by the state of society they see around them. It's only in the future that the present looks perfect.

AH, but the next generation. Just by observing some of the "little kids" around... They're just EVIL. 1st graders calling eachother gay! That's just wrong, man.

What hubris said...
Every generation looks at the next generation and says, what is the world coming to...this world is being populated with idiots. Truthfully, every generation gets more and more intelligent as a whole then the generation before it. Underage drinking, premarital pregnancies, and all that isnt getting much worse. The only thing thats really getting worse is obesity. The rest of that "generation X is better than generation Y" is garbage.

What the hell, WarmAndSCSI?!?! You don't think Americans used to make fun of mentally retarded people? In the 50's and 60's people used to lock their retarded kids up in institutions and deny that they even had mentally handicapped kids. I hope that you think the situation has improved since then; I sure do.

Stupidity isn't just inherent in today's generation. The Beatles were pretty scandalous back in the day, and look at them now. Sure, rap is full of idiots who don't know a chrome wheel from a chrome tooth, but that's exactly what people thought 30 years ago about bands that are sensible and accepted in today's society.

Quit your bitching. I'm serious - I'm so tired of people blaming today's 'generation' for being the worst thing to ever hit this earth. I'm a 3.75 student at Michigan who's responsibly held a job for going on six years. I know a LOT of people out there like me, and VERY few out there like YOU describe.

Get off your damn soapbox and stop complaining.

I'm telling you, it's only because you're older. Young kids are always brutal to each other. They're still completely self-centered and trying to define themselves in their respective social circle. The names they call each other may change, but behavior really doesn't. Of course with the prevalence of TV and video games and the somewhat exacerbated breakdown in good parenting, combined with the mass media will make it seem like we're raising a generation of devils who are just waiting to kill us all in our sleep, but we're really not.

No, I disagree. If there aren't many of who I describe, why do like several million watch that kind of trash on TV and listen to corrupt music? Your reasoning is flawed - severely

so what is supposed to be funny? imo a lot of things that are funny are things that are absurd or make no sense, and stupidity can definitely achieve that effect. stupidity is a very bad thing but that doesn't mean you can't laugh at it

Yeah, you're right. It's not because I'm older. I'm 15, man - I just have a different perspective on things compared to your average highschooler.

I never said I didn't laugh at stupid things. I just find it ironic how we all do. Trying to make intelligent conversation - doesn't go very well on ATOT nowadays - too many n00bs (referring to maturity and intelligence, not postcount).

Stuff YOU consider 'trash' or 'corrupt'. Last time I checked, this is a free country and the very ability to DISagree about the merits of something are what makes it such a great place to live. If I want to listen to the sound of someone farting into a mike for two hours, I CAN, no matter what anyone else says about it. I'd much rather have that then someone telling me what quality is. Who determines what's good and what's bad? You? You'll forgive me if I don't look forward to that day and time.

No offense, but you're really showing your age in this thead, mate. You're cripplingly naive and I think you need to do some growing up before casting denouncements on people who don't agree with you or do things you think are wrong.

I watch that kind of trash on TV. I like that trash. But what do you call ATOT? It's definitely not the most intelligent part of my day. Yet, you and I still post here. And YOU'RE blaming people for MY age for the 'corruption' of America's culture?

If you want to take the moral high ground, surf off AT, download an e-book of Merriam Webster's dictionary, and look up 'accountability.' These 'vagrant' teenagers you're talking about are the people of YOUR generation. So, it's my turn to grill YOUR PARENTS' generation:

Where are the family values? Why are today's parents so reluctant to instill proper values in their kids? I know my parents did a good job, but I'm going to push the blame on ALL other parents because their values are obviously bringing down society!

WHERE ARE THE PARENTS?

EDITED to reflect the fact that you're 15. I didn't realize that dude, sorry.

I don't think I'm an idiot. Nor do I think that reality shows are the downfall of humanity.
Reality shows are what the people want. Their craze falls in the line of human soap operas for primetime stripped of some of the cheesy contorted storyline factor.
I happen to enough some reality shows like Survivor, Amazing Race and the Mole because I enjoy watching people scheme. They are game shows just produced differently.
TV is a choice. Don't like it. Don't watch. That simple.
Want a different option, off to to TVLAND with you.

And remember
Sarcasm is the ugly cousin of Anger :)

Agreed. I'm trying to say that the way we go about this humor nowadays is making us all dumber.

The next generation will turn out whichever way the parents choose to raise their children. And, based on your observations, YOUR generation hasn't done a very good job.

Hell if I know. Sounds like you need to chill out, BTW. I was not wanting to start flames, just discussion - people are WAY too hostile.

I don't consider myself to be average, so I'm not part of that "generation" of morons.
