Why is it so hard to find a decent sandwich shop these days?

I'm talking an actual deli sandwich, not these craptastic sub shops that are all over the place. It's like these things only exist in NYC or something, and the rest of the world doesn't have a fucking clue.

These days? I think the old school deli is pretty much a NYC phenomenon. There's good sub shops all over, but delis are rare, just as they've always been.

I agree, but I'd expand the area to the northeast in general. And that goes for pizza as well.

Nothing like a good pastrami & swiss on real Jewish rye, with a big old deli pickle.

meh, I made the trek to NYC for real NY food and found that I could do just as good (if not better) in LA. Pizza AND pastrami.

There's a place here in the KC area called Adrian's Cafe, and they're god damn horrible. Make a note to never eat there if you visit this area.

What most folks don't realize is that the NYC Delis aren't doing something that others aren't. It's their vendors. There are at least two large companies and, many small ones, that provide different types of corned beef and pastrami to area delis. It's the only product they sell. That's how focused the companies are. Some delis do make their own corned beef and pastrami but, a very few. Tradition also plays a huge role. That is why you don't find very many similar delis elsewhere.

I make my own. Cut myself thick slices of sandwich bread and I pile it on with lettuce, tomato, onion, cheese and meat. I get myself a nice half or three-quarter pound sandwich for lunch. And it's much cheaper to boot. Yay!

idk, every town I've ever lived in has had at least one decent sandwich place in a short driving distance.

if not an all-out deli, even most of the pizza places around here make a fine sandwich.

there's actually a pizza place near my office that makes terrible pizza, but amazing sandwiches (because they make the bread themselves from scratch)

I work in the middle of nowhere, and we have a great sandwich shop near us. Problem is that a footlong is $10.

My wife rocks. She was on the other side of town, stopped by Jason's Deli and brought me a ruben. What a sweetheart.

Dont you live in minneapolis, theres gotta be a good one around.

I live in St. Paul and there are a few places but not a lot. Mostly it's just Subway, Jimmy John's, Potbelly, etc. What kills me is most of the people I know actually love Jimmy John's but I don't like it at all; it just seems bland and salty to me.

There's a place called Cecil's Delicatessen in St. Paul that is pretty good though.

The subway explosion has killed most of them off. Which wasn't that bad back when subway didn't suck.
