Why is it ok to pay people less who are still in college?

The main reason I post this is because of where I work. I make $7.50 an hour doing video work when I think I should be making much more since I also do IT work and program here too . While I dont plan on staying here after I graduate, I think I do just as much work as other people over here. Yet they get payed a minimum of $10.00, usually around $11-13 an hour.

Now I work 40+ hours a week over here plus I am in my last semester of college, graduating in EECE. I pay all my own bills and am always just freakin broke. I was just wondering what justification there is that I should make less just cause I am still in college. I am the only one that works over here that is in college btw. I am thinkin of asking for a decent raise since my work has gone up because the company did not hire someone to replace one of my co-workers that left and business has gone up, and if I don't get it I am leaving.

Because they can.

That sums it up.

The market has decided that college students are simply worth less than other workers.

I would guess it has something to do with the priorities of most college students.

as well as = " While I dont plan on staying here after I graduate "

They know this .............

You don't have a 4-year degree. This makes you more marketable, and increases your salary as a result.

If you were a doctoral graduate student working the same job as an undergraduate you'd probably be making significantly more. Why? Because you are a doctoral student, not an undergraduate.

I was going to say yes, it is acceptable...but 7.50 an hour seems a bit low. I worked for the company I co-oped (basically interned) with as a part time programmer after my co-op sessions were over and I was only paid $16 an hour part time. I got hired once I graduated for a significantly higher $/hr rate (although i was salary).

Well, it was not too bad at the end of 2003, but prices have been going up alot down here latley (Lafayette, LA)

The correct answer is..

Because there are 5,000 other students out there that would be willing to do it for your earnings.

my problem is more with people that get paid more because they have a family. The company I work for tends to do that... pay people that have a family more money.

Bingo.

It is ok to pay you 7.50 for that job because people(including you) are willing to do that job for 7.50.

Real world lesson #2:
You will not get paid based on what is "fair".
You will be paid based on the supply and demand for people with the skills needed to perform the job.

I'm on co-op right now, I make $12.50/hr, which isn't bad, but I'm the only person in the web development group outside of the supervisor that knows any programming. Anytime they need something in .NET or a perl script or something written, I'm the one they go to...and they all get paid signifigantly more than I do.

edit: I'm not complaining though. I've proven myself to be an extremely valuable asset to them, and despite only being in my 3rd year they've practically offered me a job after I graduate. Having a decent job gaurenteed right out of college in computer science ain't a bad deal at all.

So even though the secretary job is much simplier than my job, she deserves to get paied 10 an hour? I do alot around here to only get payed 7.50, and since the cost of living has gone up plus the amount of work has gone up since the boss wants to save some pennies but not hiring somebody to replace the co-worker that just left I think I deserve a raise. No sense in me ranting over this though, just kind of having a pissy day over here

supply and demand, what are they teaching these days in college. Don't like it, find a job that pays more. Can't find a job that'll pay more, then it sucks to be you, now don't it.

Then you better not join the army.

If you ask any college student what they THINK they should be making, their expectations are almost always higher than reality. Also, if you ask them what they think they'll be making once they get a degree, once again it's almost always higher than reality.

The fact is that experience is almost everything, and you'll get what they pay you. It's not like college graduates are a rare thing, employers have a whole sea of recent grads that are willing to work for the low wage they'll pay.

While I haven't directly seen this for employers I've worked for, I have heard about this problem and so agree with your stance. I mean, between 2 people who are equally capable and knowledgeable about a job, 1 with a family and 1 who is single.... why would a company pay the family man more? Each of the two made different choices about how they would pursue their personal life and should live with it that way. While the family man will have more expenses than the single man, that is a consequence of the decisions he made.

A good secretary is an almost priceless asset to a busy team. Diane at my job is a total gem,we'd be lost without her and she's a sweetheart to boot.

Btw, I get paid more than you because I've been working since I was 13, that's 35 yrs of various work experience not to mention school, certs and countless workshops, boot camps and specialized training.

Also, most companies will schedule around the needs of employees who are students, got a big exam or a class at an odd time? most companies will bend over for that..guess who pitch hits then ?
