Ahh, I didn't factor in the traveling-aspect. My bad. I should have just quoted bunnyfubbles:

drinking alone = no big deal
getting wasted alone = big problem

And I don't have any prejudices against people who do stuff by themselves. Hell, I worked a night-shift for two years and would get breakfast by myself at this 24-hour diner, every morning around 4-5AM - the place would be packed with other night-shifters but I hated the people at work so never went there with company. You are getting a little defensive - company is usually a good thing but now even you are assuming I need people 24/7 around me.

I only get time to go out somewhere on the weekend. And I like friends with me during those 4-5 hours. Not 24/7 as you put it.

i've never gone to a bar to drink alone but i will always enjoy a beer or some brandy by myself because i like it. it's the same as someone drinking juice with a meal, cus they like it.

The problem comes whenever you begin to depend on alcohol to enhance mundane tasks (so says my T.I.P.S. class, I'm a certified intervener now!). It's not that having a drink alone sometimes is wrong, but needing to drink just to get through normal tasks is obviously a sign of a serious problem.
I myself very much enjoy exploring the different kind of drinks you can make, I normally so happen to be alone when "experimenting."

i think thats the big difference.

I have maybe 2-4 beers a week (most the time alone). but i am not drinking pabst either. i will go and get some good beer (Paulners is my favorite. just hard to find) and enjoy it while either watching TV or goofing off on here or whatever.

while i prefer drinking with friends (then i usually have ok beer since we tend to drink a lot) being home alone is not going to stop me from enjoying a good beer.

I drink alone... *looks around*

I'd consider it more odd to go to the bar alone to drink, as opposed to having a couple of beers / wine / whatever at home.

a bar is social environment though. The main event is the socializing where at home by yourself the main event is the drinking.

Yep.

I like having a nice drink or two at home sometimes to relax. That and since my relaxation drink of chioce runs $50-$60 per 750ml, I tend to keep it to myself.:)

Sometimes when I fire up CS:S, I need that extra push to rack up more kills. I find a shot of Jagermeister helps slow the game down so I can aim better.

When I drink alone, its usually the only occasion where i can bring out the good stuff. When drinking with friends, its the cheaper stuff.

As long as you aren't excessive, its all fine.

When the majority of your friends consider Smirnoff Ice or Milwaukee's Best to be generally the best forms of alcohol I'm not getting out the good stuff.

The few friends I have who are able to appreciate the difference get the good stuff when they come over.

When people say it's bad to drink alone what they really mean is probably that it's bad to get drunk alone. Nothing wrong with 1 or 2 beers with dinner or after work. But if you keep going after that it can be indicative of a problem.

There you go. I have a beer by myself on occasion, and it's no big deal. It's a far cry from polishing off a bottle of cheap whisky by myself cause I feel bad.

i'm just gonna put this out there, the best night i had on campus last year was when i started drinking whiskey alone around 4, was drunk by about 6:30, went out and got dinner and ran into tons of people, talked to a friend on the phone for an hour while consuming, and then made my way out and hit up the party scene. I've also gotten drunk alone to pass out since I had a mild bout of insomnia and said ****** it i'm getting drunk, but later on a friend came over and we hung out until whatever point i passed out was.

Hmm... I think it's sad to be drinking alone because:

Generally people like to drink. But if you're such a sad being that even the lure of alcoholic beverages won't convince your buddies to hang with you.... then you really are pathetic!

Actually... that only applies to bars in all but two cases: Case one, you're travelling solo and are enjoying a martini at the airport bar. Case two, you're early for a meeting with someone and have a drink to bide your time. But if you're at the bar, on the same barstool for hours, drinking endless beers by yourself while you play with peanut shells on the bar counter, then that's what's sad.

Drinking at home is different. It's so much more relaxing to be able to drink and not have to put up with drunk friends. Plus, as K1052 said, I like the good stuff and don't like to share it! My poison is absinthe, which after shipping to the states runs about $120/bottle for me. One bottle is 70cL so it's a touch less than a 750mL "normal" size.

Let's also not forget the best way to meet women in a bar is by having a cocktail at the bar by yourself. Amazing how well it works.

It's because some people are compulsive and take it too far....or do it too frequently. Usually, it's safer to drink around people because there will be someone to help you if you fall or drink too much, etc...

If you are responsible, not depressed, and do not let things get out of hand, it is ok...
