Why is it considered wrong to drink alone?

I don't understand why people say its bad to drink alone. When I'm out with friends, I'm already having a good time and alcohol doesn't really make it any better. When I'm at home alone, a handful of drinks is very relaxing and makes the evening a bit more enjoyable.

Screw what people say.

I don't say it's bad to drink alone. I often have a glass of wine with dinner or a glas of nice cognac.

If you drink enough when you are alone, this question won't matter.... and nobody is around to tell you otherwise.

It's not a problem unless you do it exclusively alone and too often. I see nothing wrong with occasionally enjoying some alcoholic beverages and doing whatever it is you like to do like watch a movie or play some videogames, etc.

Like everything in life... the key is moderation. ;)

I personally consider it bad to drink alone. Usually this would be associated with depression or alchoholism. I personally have never consumed alcohol alone, and honestly I don't see a point to it. Alcohol makes people funner to be around my reducing your inhibitions and "inspiring" people to have more fun. I guess the assumption (and its true in my case), is that if you are alone you probably aren't having much fun, and drinking when you are alone is done simply to forget about your troubles and get away from the world. I know its obviously not always true, but its true often enouhg that people come to the belief that drinking alone is generally a bad thing.

come on now, while it may be true that most depressed an alocoholic people who drink will drink alone, it's not necessarily true that all people who drink alone are either.

I am assuming you mean drinking alone in a bar. (Teetotaler here) but I can imagine a drink by yourself at home is a relaxing, nice experience.

Now going to a public place for a drink by yourself is pretty creepy. From what I have seen in local pubs, a couple of friends come in for drinks and seem to enjoy themselves. The loner at the bar bugging the crap out of the bartender usually looks like a downer. Then again, drinking by yourself in a bar is probably less creepy/weird than having a meal-for-one in any place that is NOT a fast-food-joint.

Wow, you are really dependent on people around you to feel secure.

chrisms: what I said is a guy getting a drink by himself cuts the impression that he is a downer - probably depressed or bummed out or something.

On a list of normal activities that you can do alone - watch a movie, get a pizza, go drinking, have a gourmet meal in the kind of place that needs a reservation etc., drinking alone is generally regarded as odd behavior. And the reason is that people assume the guy is a loner or depressed about something. That's pretty much what I meant.

You also said it is "creepy/weird" to have a meal-for-one at any place that isn't fast food. I did that all the time while traveling, and while it did seem weird at first it was only because of my own insecurities. The same goes for getting a drink by yourself at a bar. I've never done it but I've talk to people who were grabbing a pint at the bar just to watch the game or something. While there are plenty of sad/depressed people who do it I don't think it is fair for you to call everyone who does creepy or weird. Just because they don't bring a friend doesn't mean they don't have any, not all of us need people clinging to our sides 24/7 to feel comfortable or normal.
