Why is IMing quicker than Email?

What makes IMing faster than Email? (transfer speed) Other than it being a few less clicks and not typing an address?

If they are the same speed, why not integrate both?
Having an email client that shows when your contacts are online, and stores IMs and Emails in the same format, would be wonderful!

The fact that you use really crappy e-mail service?

The only time e-mails I send using GMail take more than 1 second to reach their destination is if I'm sending an attachment. That usually adds an extra second, maybe two.

ok, so it seems like its more of a client issue, when talking about the convenience of email.
if your email client refreshed automatically,this wouldnt be an issue.

🙂 I guess I should start using gmail then.
But does gmail store IM messages and Mail messages in the same inbox? That is what I am talking about. TOTAL integration. Like if they were treated as the exact same thing.


I figured since my first question got answered so fast, itd be good to throw something else in there 🙂

Gmail refreshes frequently I believe.
Other e-mail clients don't.

But why would you want your e-mail to act like an IM program ? Just use an IM program.

ICQ does that or from what i remember when i use ot use it. AIM does'nt want to because it would require a ALOT more server space to store all the messages that needs to get passed along. As far as speed goes, I'm pretty sure ify ou're sending email within a network service, its just as fast if you take into consideration that e-mails are larger in size since they contain headers and such.

Because its easier to just have one! I'd love to be able to look into one inbox to see my IM messages and my email messages. I suppose for some people though, if they chat hundreds of lines worth on IM, that would make sorting through their emails quite the mess!

See, ICQ is actually pretty smart that way. So it doesnt really differ that much from email. except that they are still 2 totally seperate things.

If they were combined, this would be better though. Especially if there were a good way to sort through all the messages.
