Why is Frodo considered the hero? Why wasn't it Sam?

Frodo's the hero because he wears the ring and doesn't turn evil under its power.

Sam's the helper, but he didn't actually have to deal with the ring directly. So he's a big dude too, but not the biggest.

Now, an interesting side note to this story is to look at it from Tolkien's social viewpoint. England when he wrote the books was still very class-conscious - "the sun never sets on the British Empire" sort of thing, rigid levels of society from the monarchy on down. The hero was always an upperclass dude, the hero's helper some lowerclass dude. It was considered somehow normal that the helper did a lot of stuff and the hero got the credit - look at Hillary climbing Mt. Everest, for example. There's a lot of that in Frodo, rich dude, and Sam, less-worthy farmer.
