I have gmail, I don't see why its special at all.

Agreed. I didn't really care that much and I stumbled across one. It definitely has a better interface than most webmail, but real e-mail clients still own it.
Ditto. From my perspective it's mostly just hype which is what Google wanted. Google can easily afford to offer however much space they want to make it sound appealing when they know the vast majority of users won't even come close to touching that space. Couple that with the fact that they're slowly spreading it via viral marketing to lead up to their IPO and they've got no concerns about storage issues as they're slowly building a user base and relying on the additional advertising money generated from it to pay for more storage as it grows. If they had a user base as large as Yahoo does currently I have a hard time imagining they'd be able to legtimately offer 1GB of storage to tens of millions of users while having the facilities to back it up.

I got a couple accounts (no invites left by the way so don't ask), but don't see what the big deal is. I guess the coolest thing right now is that since people are getting in relatively early they've got the chance to scoop up some cool names.

Isn't Google supposed to be putting ads in your email that are based off of what the email is about or something? Did they have to remove this function or what?

Hm ads IN the email? I thought the ads would be like the Google search engine, it'll be a sidebar on the righthand side with ads.

The ads are on the right side just like in a google search. They're not IN the email.

Yeah that's what i thought. Then i don't care, they need to make money somehow... can't expect free to be perfect. But it's MUCH better than Hotmail and their spam.
