Why is DoTA so popular?

yeah, I don't even know what TDA requirements are right now. At one point I got close to qualifying based on the forum post count requirement - maybe I should follow through on that.

just started playing got all my roomates and a friend playing it. its VERY addictive fast and balanced. VERY fun playing with or against your friends.

I always found Rival Nations to be a far superior game. Balance was better and having the option of multiple heroes (wasn't necessarily stronger to have more depending on your strat) lead to more interesting combinations. I haven't played either in a very long time though.

Start playing in the DXD league if you want to. Its a bit more fun that just regular public games. Join channel clan dxd then -sign for a game.

Dota owns, it has a BIG community following. Its fun cause its easy to pick up (but hard to master), no microing required, only controlling your one hero. However, that also attracts a lot of 12 year olds who talk trash and leave games.

Ok, granted some microing is required for certain heros. I hate playing against meepo, when I'm not with a team, he can get really imba when played properly.

One thing that makes me like it is the fact that I'm playing with my friends. When you get together with 4 other friends and you're all on Vent it gets to be really fun. Its not just the game itself that's fun but it's the actual hanging out with the friends that's fun. Also, with lots of heroes and combinations of items and builds I guess you could say that it has a great strategic part to it which also makes it fun. One thing is that it's hard to start out if you don't have any friends that help you out. Most of the people online are, for a lack of a better word, fags. Sorry if I offended anyone, but it's true. Most people online won't help you out and will only call you a noob. But anyways, as I said the biggest attraction to this game is the strategic factor along with playing with your friends and the cooperation and teamwork that you have to have in order to win.

To the guy who said alchemist is a low-tiered hero at best, I have to ask if you've ever played DoTA before. His stun is borderline imba, his poison cloud is amazing for farming/harassing, his ult is like a free heal on short cd not to mention large benefits from items that proc on hit. He farms extra gold with goblin greed. He's amazing early game with his stun and remains good mid-late game with superior farming and lane control. If you want to talk shitty heroes lets talk dazzle.

To this guy who said alchemist is a good hero...he isn't. In high-level play, you will probably never see alchemist get banned or picked, whereas dazzle is often banned. That alone should tell you that dazzle is top-tier, whereas alchemist just isn't viable. If you're just messing around in pubs, then *any* hero can be top-tier.

Where are you pulling this from? I admit alchemist isn't going to be seen much if at all in competitive league play, but he is great for pubs where teamplay is limited. Dazzle being banned or picked in league play? I do not think so. I'd have to see some replays of tournament games where this actually happened, not just some TDA/DXD experiences or hearsay. Not even the asians are gonna pick dazzle.

Depends on playstyle, I like to farm/carry because I am good at cs'ing so a hero like nevermore is great. If your having trouble against zeus and the other team has some spellcasters try buying hood of defiance for magic spell dmg reduction. Luna and Yurnero are fun picks - their ultimates are ggbuttons as long as there are no creeps around, and both are excellent heros overall. A good hero for starting out with is skeleton king - his ultimate gives you two lives, and you get full mana when you resurrect (and he has ranged stun). I personally found when starting to play DoTA my favourite hero changed pretty often until eventually I didn't have a favourite hero anymore - they're all pretty good (except dazzle as noted above).

Playing a gank and escape hero the most difficult job in the game. A good gank hero has to manage a lot more things than the carry hero. Gank heroes have to manage their time in lane vs time running around ganking. If you spend to much time in a lane, then the enemy carry will get to powerful; if you spend to much time ganking, then you end up under-leveled late game. Your team expects you to provide wards, but you still need to farm some items for late game. Also you are exposed to much more risk than a carry hero. You have to get into the enemy forest / lane try to quickly kill the enemy carry before his friends arrive to kill you!

I agree with your synopsis of what support heroes generally do, but I don't follow with your thinking that carry is the easiest job in DoTA. If the carry fails then your screwed, and being able to cs/deny like a korean on steroids is prerequisite to do a good job. You describe it as if the carry is in a seperate game farming while the rest of the team is like gangbusters on the other team. A lot of players need to learn to play support because they're used to trying to carry every game and be a lone wolf, but the difficulty between either position is really the same.

It depends on your team's strateg. Currently, one popular metagame is heavy ganking, with most of your team participating, so everyone is a gank hero. It takes a slightly different set of skills to gank, more anticipation of the enemy but doesn't take away from the difficulty of carrying.

A classic strategy is the 4 strong lane/push heros and 1 carry that farms/jungles till they are imba. Its still not easy, you have to know how to stay alive, when to farm and went to team battle, and also know how to use your character to carry most effectively, not to mention your team is depending on YOU to turn the tide. Even farmed carries can be disabled, so you still have to play smart.

ah its good to know that at plays dota. i started about 2 years ago (6.3*) and still try to squeeze at least one game a night.
