Why is calling someone a "mouth-breather"...

Now I'm curious - why/how did you think of this? 😕

(I'm really curious - if you don't want to put it up, please PM me!)

Have you ever seen someone who is really a mouth breather? Do you know how stupid they sound/look?

Typically "cultured" folks are taught to keep their mouth closed when breathing -e.g. breathing through their nose is more polite. Hense "mouth breathers" are uncultured swine.

never heard of that before. many people here breathe through thier mouths during pollen seasons (6months out of they year) just because thier noses stay stopped up all the time. until I had a sceptoplasty done, I breathed out of my mouth a lot. (I still do everyonce in a while it's normal in my neck of the woods)

Have you ever watched someone with their gaping hole open and a blank expression on their face? Mostly nascar fans do this.

I naturally breath w/ my mouth open just a little bit, b/c if I try to close it and breath only through my nostrils, I feel like I'm really short of breath. I just can't get enough air intake thru my nostrils.

you have a massive booger up there. pick a winner!

Your nose is a filtering mechanism to prevent dust, irritants, etc. from reaching your throat and lungs, while your mouth is not. Therefore, its definitely better to breathe in through your nose.

Because people who breathe through their mouth tend to sit around with their mouth wide open. They generally look pretty stupid and are considered that by many. I really have no clue.🙂

I breathe through my nose a lot, unless I have a cold or my allergies are acting up. I breathe through my mouth when I'm sleeping or going to sleep. I've found that people who sleep with their mouth closed and breathe through their nose wake up with horribly bad breath.

Not sure, but I'm lucky that breathing through the mouth is possible - otherwise using public washrooms would become even more of a hassle.

Yeah, me too. But I had my nose broken in jr. high and had corrective surgery, supposedly in order to "allow me to breath easier through my nose". Yeah. Baloney, it was healing fine until the damn docs felt the need to re-break it and "fix" it. I mean, it doesn't look in any way bad from the outside, but it is seemingly slightly difficult to breath purely through my nose anymore. Guess the docs needed to finanance their upcoming trip to Jamaica or something. What the hell did I know back then, I was just a kid.

Because people that walk around with their mouth constantly hanging open usually look like they aren't the brightest people around. It's not so much that you breathe through your mouth but when you let it hang open all the time like you are sleeping.

It has nothing to do with what you're taught. Some people cannot breath through their noses because they dont get enough breath into their lungs.

When I was younger I could not breathe through my nose at all. My adenoids were inflamed and I had to get surgery to remove them. So for the first 8 years of my life I was a mouth breather.

One of my friends from high school was a mouth breather. In class, he would always sit there, mouth agape, with a blank stare on his face. Ironically enough, he was valedictorian.
