Why is aspartame bad for you?

I don't believe it is a proven carcinogen (unlike saccharine, which it replaced). IIRC the theory about why aspartame is bad has something to do with the fact that it turns into some variation of formaldehyde when it's exposed to temperatures over 200 degrees (though how your body would generate this kind of heat without your dying is anybody's guess).

Actually, some evidence suggest Aspartame is highly toxic above 86 fahrenheit. YMMV.

Depends on who you ask. If you ask people in the sugar industry they will all tell you it is horrible for you and show you some scientfic evidence. If you ask people who are in the diet softdrink industry (besides splenda) they will tell you it is fine for you. The government also has shown that it is fine for you.

Anyways, I still drink diet though. I would be a bit heavier if I did not.

When I drank a ton of it at one point, I had problems with short term memory. I was definitely slower, and when I stopped drinking it, it reversed. Not much of an experience for science, but it has been shown to eat holes in rats brains at very significant levels.

I think it's fine. I drink a lot and although I am sure it's worse than nothing, I'm sure it's better than the fear mongering morons say.

Some people actually have a condition that prevents them from metabolizing aspartame the way it should.
But no worries, you were probably tested for it at birth. And the symptoms are a lot worse than migraines after drinking some.

A recent study by a canadian university showed that people with the same food, only difference being regular vs diet cola, had the same blood sugar level after 1 hour of exercise.
So diabetics can forget the colas, diet or not, it just doesn't help.

Were diabetics in the study? A healthy body should maintain a thin spectrum of blood sugar anyway, and an hour is enough time to stabilize!

Aspartame is not bad for you, even at levels around 45mg/kg while the average intake is 3mg/kg. Find me a study that proves it causes cancer.

From official aspartame site....

The Gateway Reports No Link Between Aspartame and Health Problems
The Gateway reported on a recent review in the Canadian Journal of Diabetes (below), which debunks the alleged rumors that aspartame is related to a variety of health problems. The article notes, "While countless Internet sites have long warned of the dangers of the artificial sweetener aspartame, a recent study suggests that the substance is safe. The study, published in the Canadian Journal of Diabetes, reviewed 55 studies of the artificial sweetener to assess the link between aspartame and brain tumours, seizures and the effect on blood-sugar control. It found no evidence of a direct connection."
