I'll wait until there's a game that I have to have with DX12 support.

I see nothing else in 10 that would prompt me to upgrade from 7.

yeah that was the only reason I upgraded to 10 to be honest, for DX12 support. Let's hope in a year or so it becomes better.

The spyware built into the OS is the major issue for me. Why do I need to do registry tweaks, disable windows services, outright delete some system files, block addresses on my router and change a crapton of settings to disable it ?

I just don't like it, especially given that since the internet monitoring revelations we know the NSA is backdoored into Microsoft and the other big companies. I'm sure they love this OS and the built in keylogging and data collection etc.

There should be a straight up one click selection to disable all monitoring and data collection being sent to MS, full stop. The only reason I feel I need to run the OS is because I do gaming on my PC and I'm going to want DX12. If DX12 was available on 8.1 I would have never upgraded.

Its a list of recently opened files when you right click on a program in your task bar.

huh, I don't seem to get anything weird when I right click on a program in the taskbar? Chrome has a list of recent rabs, a (file) explorer has my pinned places which is kinda cool and frequent whatevers. The other two programs don't have anything. Did I turn it off somehow?

I agree with most of your points Berry, except I don't mind the new Start Menu. Reminds me a bit of Dashboard on OS X. I like the quick info at a glance that's tucked away when you don't need it.

I've been testing Windows 10 for awhile now. Despite being initially impressed, I've grown less fond of it over time. The recent privacy revelations really irked me. It's not so much the fact that Microsoft is collecting the data, but it's who they're sharing it with. That's something they and other big data companies have been rather vague about.

It's the loss of control that bothers me more than anything. Snowden proved the tin foil hat wearers correct. Of course there was the Fappening last year as well. Once your data gets thrown into "the cloud" it's no longer yours.

It's not so much an issue for us since we know how to turn it off. Though even some tech folks had to do some menu digging. Your average ham & egger doesn't have a clue.

And for those who keep bringing up smartphones, stop. Just stop. It's a weak/BS argument. Just because I use one doesn't invalidate my argument either. I think lack of privacy is a huge issue on those devices, and there badly needs to be effective and transparent opt-out options for them. Call me old school, but I don't think you should have to trade your personal info just to use your privately owned computer. Period. Doesn't matter if it's a tower of power or a phone. I'd prefer going back to paying for upgrades if it means I get to retain control of my data.

Aside from that, I don't see any real reasons to upgrade to 10 on my main desktop. It's getting long in the tooth, and my GPUs aren't DX12 compatible. I'll probably still install Windows 10 on my next build, but I'll use it strictly for gaming. Linux Mint has proven to be a solid daily driver.

I'll keep it on my laptop for the time being to muck about with it.

Thank you sir, great post.

Heck even on my Samsung Galaxy Note 4 I rooted it on KitKat 4.4.4 to stop the forced upgrade to Lollipop that when I tried made my phone laggy and decreased my battery life, I also disabled Knox and thanks to rooting I was able to get rid of all the bloatware that Samsung wants to force me to use like Evernote and Dropbox for example.

On three very different machines Win 10 is snappier and performs better than Win 7. I absolutely love that aspect. No more heavy aero while still maintaining a decent aesthetic.

You and I see eye to eye. Gaming is literally the only reason I continue to use Windows as my primary OS at home. Game availability on Linux has definitely improved, but it still lacks many of the AAA titles that Windows is needed for. I'd be booting to Linux Mint otherwise.

I'm not nearly as pessimistic about Windows 10 as many are because I know that the first six months of any new OS means a ton of patching and new drivers. My concerns are 3-5 years from now when "Windows as a Service" becomes more than a concept. I'm curious if they will eventually start charging an annual fee, and offering Windows 10 now for free is a strategic move to rapidly build up the install base. In order to satisfy their stock holders, announcing that this is the last "boxed" version of Windows can only mean that they found another way to meet or exceed current profitability that doesn't involve regular releases. Otherwise the board of directors wouldn't have gone along with it. To me that means that it will be either one or a combination of: advertising, recurring license fees, or micro/macro transactions (games, apps, media, etc).

The more "connected" things get, the more I'm drawn toward GNU. Unfortunately, it might mean gaming as long as my current hardware is viable and then moving to an alternate platform.

holy wow this thread moves fast.

i'm not sure you see my point here;
i have a W7 system that works perfectly. when i follow a thread by r0ach from quake forums to overclock.net to microsoft forums that essentially says "blah blah blah BAD MOUSE blah" i have a good reason not to venture into windows 10.

when i read that only some editions of W10 will be able to fully turn off some features; that i will lose my unlocker, my markC mouse fix, that it has even more services that cannot be turned off (i use BlackViper's guide and have almost everything off), all for what ?

i'm sorry if i seem blind to your fps boosts and such but i come from a time when systems crahsed to BSOD five times a day. so when a system doesnt crash, i know i want it.

but what is it that my W7 doesn't do right?

i know i'm not being adventurous but my mouse needs to work perfect or else i freak out. i tried W8 when the 8.1 patch came out and i had it for less than 1 hour, horrible mouse lag. you can google that, i wasn't the only one to have this issue.

i don't want a repeat of that. i'm fine with my w7 and will not upgrade if i read all these warning signals.

maybe in a couple years, when my system truly becomes "old".

So what's the gripe with privacy exactly? I haven't touched 10 till a few days ago and it's about what I expected since MS is trying to change their biz model it seems (free OS).
I saw the torrent-like windows updates, I turned it off for now but it's a neat idea, I saw the sharing wifi passwords thing, I turned it off I think but again it's a neat idea(so annoying when people come over I have to give out wifi pass and approve their device by MAC on my router, I don't like guest networks), the rest of it that is apparent is voice/txt learning and browsing stuff for adds. Other than the other usual 2015/Google-esq stuff what's the deal?

Pretty much my thoughts too but on the bolded I wonder if people complaining about privacy stuff even own a smart phone and if they do, do they complain about having to turn off location settings and contact sync as well?
I used to have a flip-phone, but even the ability to track you from cell towers started to annoy me, and also I think the newer flip-phone I got upgraded to was made cheaper than my old one and felt like it was radiating more RF frequencies causing cancer in my ear through the cheap plastic so I threw it in the garbage.

Man I never disable that stuff, not since I had a phone with a real battery anyway. It kills half the neat stuff if you turn off all the tracking and integration, turns it into a walkie talkie with a web browser. I figure if you can't trust them to not use the data badly, then you can't trust them to not have a fake turn-off button anyway. Are non-removable batteries a coincidence? lol..

The truly experienced paranoids know that having established patterns you can control and manipulate at will is vastly superior to trying to have no pattern or traceable history at all. That's like day 2 class stuff.

Nothing wrong with 8.1.. with a couple of simple mods it looks and acts just like 7. I see no reason to upgrade yet. Every time I boot up with 10 I get annoyed at something. Latest is that windows defender stays on and does it's own scans despite having Avast free installed. Turn it off and it turns itself back on.

Avast seems to break firefox on certain sites like yahoo.com and firefox's own site. I have nothing against upgrading though and will go back and forth to see if 10 becomes less annoying to me and they fix some of the inconsistent UI and release some good theme mods to make it look like 7.

I WANT to like Windows 10. It's not like Windows 8 where the minute I heard enough about it I knew I'd hate it without even trying it (honestly have not played much with it still, but experienced it enough to hate it). But all this stuff, makes me probably going to hate 10 too. It's too bad, because as it stands right now there is no suitable upgrade path from 7, and eventually that will be needed. I don't care that much though since I'm not in IT anymore, and personally I use Linux so meh. Though when my win7 gaming machine reaches a point where games wont work on it anymore then it will be problematic. Hopefully game makers realize that 7 is still the last proper windows OS and will continue to support it.

On similar note though, cell phones are probably just as bad as windows 10. I really wish they were more open like PCs are where you can put another OS such as Linux. At least with PCs I'm not forced to go with the latest version of Windows.

10 will probably eventually go on my gaming machine due to dx12. But otherwise no way. My other work computers will continue on with Windows 7.

And bravo to another lame ass berry thread.

Not sure why all this couldn't have easily gone in the thread made for W10 opinions...ya know...the one titled So how are you liking Win10 so far?

But then I guess that wouldn't have given berry another chance to draw attention to himself and his ramblings.

The more I use Win 10, the more I think I'll just use Win 10 on my gaming PC and stick to Win 7 or 8.1 on my other systems. I've gone and disabled a BUNCH of stuff in Win 10, one shouldn't really have to do that, I went and disabled data tracking service, turned everything off in privacy, WU driver updates, wifi sense, etc.- I didn't have to do much with Win 8 other than slap on a third party start menu.

In this particular case, I probably would've been more happy paying for Win 10 and not have all these tracking stuff.

Hopefully at some point someone just writes a little app you download and run and it disables all that crap for you.

I'm sure hackers will dig deeper and locate any other tracking stuff that may be hidden from any options.
