Why I don't have tv

I'm bed bound for the foreseeable future due to a car wreck and a broken heel and thigh bone. I had to move back in with my parents for the time being since my mom doesn't work and is helping take care of me.

I'm extremely bored, I can't really move hardly anything, and I'm stuck flipping the channels all day (I haven't started a book yet but I need to). All things said, for the entire time I've been reintroduced to cable I've found essentially nothing at all worth watching. In fact, the only thing I have enjoyed came on PBS which is free lol.

Anyways, this sucks. I hurt. Don't get into wrecks, they're no fun! :(

Yea, TV's the worst. I haven't had one in 15 years or so. There's a few shows that are watchable, but outside HBO specials, and reruns there's nothing I'd make a point of watching.

Hope you get better soon. Any permanent damage you think?

They do have Netflix, but I'm not a movie watcher (ill see 3 or 4 in a years time). Are there any decent tv series on Netflix ( I've already seen all of lost)? I dunno, I generally only enjoy watching documentaries, but the ones I've watched on H2 and science channel so far are terrible. Aside from PBS, I don't think Americans are capable of making non juvenile, neurotic documentaries. For instance, every documentary I've see thus far involves , electric guitars, stupid zooming and camera angle, and they all go way off subject onto really stupid tangents.

I think every day I lay here I get more and more bitter. :p

I have cable TV and honestly I only watch a few channels out of all the ones that are there. The system is so outdated. We need to be able to pay only per channel. I've been contemplating cancelling it, actually. It's like 70 bucks per month and I probably watch 5 hours of TV per month. Not worth it. Though it is nice when I'm eating to be able to just flip on the TV and watch something.

Yes indeed! Some that I've enjoyed, in no particular order:

Breaking Bad
Arrested Development
24
Various Star Trek series
Jericho
The IT Crowd

...and plenty more, including some older stuff too (like Blackadder!). Not sure what your tastes are, but there's a ton of stuff in there. Browse through it!

I don't have a TV either. I do have a TV tuner but I think I watch a ~1h TV every week, because it's just not worth watching.

if you don't like movies in general it's obvious that TV will be boring.

Honestly the best things on Netflix are the TV series. Some good documentaries there also.

Might enjoy things like masterpiece theater or other high end productions? Plenty of British series on there, which I find to be written far better than most american series.

The Big Bang Theory. If you can't make the universe your bitch and bend to your will at least you can watch actors playing the part of physicists attempt to do so in funny and interesting ways.

Bazinga.

edit: is that on netflix? I don't really know.

Books and video games are a better bet. Nothing good on TV since Sledgehammer got canceled.

If we had cable "a la carte" you would pay the same amount for just a few channels. The cable company has to pay for their infrastructure to get the signal to your home. That's a fixed expense. So, the first channel you get would probably cost like 60 bucks. The cable company would get less revenue from people who previously had like 500 channels since they could drop 300 of them. Therefore people with just a few channels would have to make up the revenue for the people who previously had a huge number of channels. I don't remember the exact figures but you could add up the cost of something like those 300 least popular channels and they only increase your cable bill like 5 dollars a month.

Some of the best tv, imo, are the BBC's documentaries. Unfortunately most of them are not shown on BBC America. They are available from "alternate" sources if thats your thing.

While I haven't watched it yet, I hear House of Cards is good.

if you're into science fiction, Doctor Who could take weeks to watch (skip the "classic" and start off with the 2005+ series)... Sons of Anarchy is also great.

alternatively, skip the tv, grab a kindle/iPad/nook, and enjoy having access to every book ever written. I spent my weekend snowed in on the couch with an iPad full of comics to catch up on

edit: I can empathize, though... I was stuck in the hospital for a week a few years ago, and the only thing in the room was a tv with basic cable. no internet, either. other than the evening news, I don't think the tv was on at all. I had a kindle with 3g and I spent the entire week reading.
