Why/How do some people just let themselves go so bad?

I saw an old g/f today at the 7-11, didnt even recognize her even though we dated for a year or so. She got married about 7 years or so ago (IIRC) and I would estimate she has put on over 50 pounds. Its not like she has had kids or anything, and I'm pretty sure its not a genetic thing, she was relatively thin/average when we were dating, which was 16 years ago or so.

How do people do this to themselves?

Do they just quit caring, or not even have self-respect left? I'm not talking about putting on 10-15 pounds or so after getting married and lazy, this girl is only about 5'-4" and trust me, 50+ pounds really shows on her. I couldnt decide whether to feel pity or disgust for her, I know weight issues are difficult to contend with, but packing on that kind weight really, in my mind, would almost amoutn to a complete lack of self control.

We talked about doing something together with our spouses sometime, but all I think about when looking at her is what she used to look like and thinking WTF happened.

People get lazy, and other things become a priority (job, paying the bills, etc.) It's happend to a lot of my friends too.

I know whoever I marry I will love so much I don't care about a little extra weight, but I really hope my future wife doesn't gain weight like that. It also does say something about their personality.

That extra weight could be from something else like depression. Believe it or not, there are fat people out there that get that way for reasons other than laziness. At any rate, if they are happy with who they are, who are we to complain?

on the contrary, it makes the rest of us look better.... so we should really be encouraging it. that's why i'm for the legalization of drugs btw :D

Same thing happened to an ex girlfriend of mine. When we broke up, she was getting a little "thick," but it wasn't that bad, she was just an average sized girl. A friend of mine saw her the other day (it's been about 8 years since we broke up), and said she is one big girl now.

Maybe she has a medical condition? Maybe she is on medication that has contributed? Or maybe she just had that metabolism change and got bigger. I don't think that most overweight people are that way because they are lazy.

it's definately because they get fat and lazy because they get comfortable. or they just give up.

anyways, I saw this really fat guy today in the mall...i was standing behind him in line, and i mean this dude was not only fat, but he looked like a mini fat bastard...like the goddam cool-aid guy. he had like DD boobs and no less that like a 80 inch waist, because this dude was like twice my waistline but 1 foot shorter...it was so weird...

I didn't mean lazy as in they sit around and eat all day watching Springer. I meant lazy in that these people might not be compensating for getting older (dropping metabolism or you are less active because you are sitting in an office now and not walking to and from classes) 'cause you have to start actively watching what you eat, excercising, etc., to keep from putting on weight. I didn't mean to imply that all fat people are lazy, or only lazy people are fat.

Many of my friends got married right after college and then tacked on 30lbs (or more) inside a year. They just didn't care. Of course I have a friend who's popped out 2 kids in 3 years, worx her ass off, and gets back down to the size she "originaly" was (before the first kid).

Oh no! It's... the dreaded chemical imbalance! Someone call a pharmacist and get these people on some medication, stat...

How does that old saying go? A woman marries a man hoping he'll change, and he never does, while a man marries a woman thinking she'll never change, and she does...

If any of these women's marriages went kaput, they'd be back down to fighting weight in no time.

Some of you guys ought to grow up. Theoretically, you marry for love right? So, if the woman you love starts gaining weight, are you going to tell her to lose it or you're leaving? Besides, people really do have chemical imbalances, etc, that causes them to gain weight. And for some, it just isn't a priority. So, quit picking on them just because you're jealous that you can't eat that last donut without having to run it off the next day. ;)

Funny how those ubiquitous chemical imbalances seem to kick in after marriage..

Yes, you should marry for love, but wanting to be sexually attracted to your partner is a legitimate issue.

There you go, she's snagged her man, time to break out the twinkies.

Actually, in most of the cases I've seen, it's the man who becomes a fat slob.

Physical health is a legit issue too. I don't know 'bout ya'll but I don't wanna have a heart attack and get my chest ripped open for triple by-pass surgery when I'm 50... or ever. How someone loox be damned, it's just not healthy to start racking up "walking downstairs to make coffee" as yer excercise for the day, and deciding to "cut caloires" by getting a diet coke w/yer supersized Big Mac value meal.

Well for a man large quantities of beer usually become a necessity after marriage, so yeah. :)

Sluggo, you are an ass(IMHO) as are the rest of you simple minded, tunnel visioned, lilly white, skinny ass computer geeks that agree with this "derailed" train of thought.

Sluggo, You dated this girl a long time ago....she is married now. Heavy or not WTF does your opinion matter. Is she happy? Is her life all she wants it to be? Do you know, do you care? What's the deal? You still have feelings for her? You feel inferior because you were not the "man" for her? I'm guessing she made the right choice so many years ago and she's prolly thinking right now,"Gee...Sluggo has sure changed he used to be such a nice little moma's boy and now he's an egotistical mama's boy." I'm guessing her invite to do something was out of pity for your sorry, insecure, narrowminded ass than any real desire to interract with you and your spouse.

While we are on the subject, why don't you share w/90k+ other people your "current" wife's shortcommings?

In summation, I ain't perfect, don't pretend to be but I also ain't about to begin attending the Sluggo school of human relations anytime soon.

WERD!

Just keeping perspective :) I always laugh when I see overweight, balding, odoriferous men complaining that their wife has [insert some relatively minor flaw]. Same standards for both spouses are necessary.
