You gotta be kidding me. I'm not a huge hendrix fan, but Lennon and Clapton are both way superior musicians.

Well everyone has been influenced by somebody. Maybe we should all be paying our respects to Zug the caveman for figuring out how to beat a stick against a rock :)

Just thought I'd throw this in here for everyone saying he has no voice/scratchy voice etc...

Dylan

Not saying he sounds the greatist in that song either, but I personally was surprised when I heard him sing in that style the first time.

Also- I saw him live a couple years ago....not a great show at all...

I love Dylan, and I went to see him in concert a few years back - wow, I know he was never a great performer, but he was just awful.

and interestingly, they seem appropriate especially today.

Come gather 'round people
Wherever you roam
And admit that the waters
Around you have grown
And accept it that soon
You'll be drenched to the bone.
If your time to you
Is worth savin'
Then you better start swimmin'
Or you'll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin'.

Come writers and critics
Who prophesize with your pen
And keep your eyes wide
The chance won't come again
And don't speak too soon
For the wheel's still in spin
And there's no tellin' who
That it's namin'.
For the loser now
Will be later to win
For the times they are a-changin'.

Come senators, congressmen
Please heed the call
Don't stand in the doorway
Don't block up the hall
For he that gets hurt
Will be he who has stalled
There's a battle outside
And it is ragin'.
It'll soon shake your windows
And rattle your walls
For the times they are a-changin'.

Come mothers and fathers
Throughout the land
And don't criticize
What you can't understand
Your sons and your daughters
Are beyond your command
Your old road is
Rapidly agin'.
Please get out of the new one
If you can't lend your hand
For the times they are a-changin'.

The line it is drawn
The curse it is cast
The slow one now
Will later be fast
As the present now
Will later be past
The order is
Rapidly fadin'.
And the first one now
Will later be last
For the times they are a-changin'.

Turns out that the times didn't change at all. All the things he was complaining about then are worse today.

Same here. I saw him when Merle Haggard opened for him. Dylan didn't even pick up a guitar, he sat on the keyboards all night.

NO ONE has had more influence on modern music than has Bob Dylan. You can say that everyone has been influenced by someone. Well, theres a phylogenetic tree, if you will, of modern music. The central node from which all musicians after the 70s diverge is Bob Dylan.
No way around that.

Of course, Dylan derives a lot of influence from the early Folk Singers, Delta Blues, etc. The main difference is that while most of those musicians made a career of performing traditional tunes, Dylan mostly performs his own material.

So true. Every decent band in the last 40 years has had Bob write songs for them. Mannfred Mann...............way too many to list. Bob is THE most influential artist ever on so many levels.

he sucks

False.

He wrote some great songs but his performances live are terrible. I thought I'd go see him perform since he was a legend and all, man what a mistake, worse show I've ever seen. It was horrible, so bad that I felt embarrassed for him.

I felt exactly the same... embarassed. I saw him in 2004 and he was terrible.

50 years of drinking and smoking will do that.

Don't forget the huge influence that Woody Guthrie had on him.

I like his lyrics, but I've never been able to listen to him because he can't sing at all. He just mumbles his words - it's like hearing a stoned person talk...wait...

Agreed. "For yew an me". Without that line "We are the World" would really suck. :)

FTW. That got me into Dylan...I love his stuff.

FYI, Dave Matthews Band, Live in Chicago, had a great "All Along the Watchtower"...I love that version and listen to it all the time...
