I imagine I'll have the same problem. I went to a top 5 engineering school and got my ass kicked in a few classes so I know my GPA isn't going to touch that of someone who went to South Iowa State Community College Tech and it really sucks that admissions policies don't factor in undergrad curriculum difficulty enough.

Law school would probably be the worst if I ever decided to do it, because as an engineer I'm competing on an equal level of GPA with people who have fluff majors like organizational studies from crap schools.

I'm sorry that happened but don't necessarily knock TX state schools. I received my BS in EE from University of Texas at Dallas (a state school), which has one of the highest admission standards in the state (including private schools like Baylor) and has been ranked in the top 50 or 100 (I forget which) universities in the nation. UTD was ranked above Baylor if I remember correctly. So not everyone who is trying to get their PhD at the school you wanted to attend is from some podunk easy community college.

I do agree they should take into account the difficulty of the school you are coming from and I applaud you for earning your degrees where you did and wanting to pursue a PhD. I hope you can find a school that appreciates the work you have accomplished so far and wants to claim you as a graduate of their doctorial program.

Are you implying that Texas state schools aren't good? UT-Austin is one of the finest engineering school in the US. Look it up.

Considering there are so many engineering schools in the US, i wouldnt be surprised if ANY state school ranks in the top "100". BTW, John hopkins is like ... what? #1 ranked in the biology/medical department? No state school holds a candle, besides maybe Berkeley/Michigan/Washington.

School is not EVERYTHING. People get waaaaaaaaay too caught up in the whole school thing. It's important to get educated, yes. It's a good thing to have degrees and certifications under your belt, YES! But it is NOT everything and NEVER WILL BE everything. YOU are the person, YOU are the product. If you're sh!t, you're sh!t with or without a degree. Nobody wants to hire an idiot whether he's got credentials or not. Experience and character will get you where you want to go - school just may help you get there.

That said, everyone deserves an equal chance at a good edumacation.

Going to a good college can help but yes, getting an education should top any priorities. I think what you decide to study has a lot to do with how you'll survive in the working world. Going to a good college won't hurt you though since it'll open doors for you that won't be accessible from someone who had gone to an inferior school. How they grade and how your GPA will look at the end depends on your professors and your department policies. If they mandate a failure rate of 50% in each class then well ... you're screwed, good college or not. :D

Just gotta chime in that at least in Texas about all of the state schools are superior to any private school.

Not even looking at what school you went to and comparing your GPA to others, I always hated comparing my GPA to other degrees. Most science/engineering classes are much more difficult than a typcial libral art/business class so I always got aggravated working my butt off for a 'B' and some dope just wiggled his way thru a business course and got an 'A.'

the thing about grad school is that you often really want to go to one, because there is a professor you really want to work with. it's not always about the degree/name... it's about getting to work with the person/people you admire.

rice is good for liberal arts and a lot of the natural sciences. but i say it is a rip off to pay to go to rice undergrad for engineering.

Reading lesson 101:

about all of the state schools

Not all, but most.

Rice was the only private school I was thinking about when I said that. TCU/SMU have good business/MBA programs, but I wouldn't think anything better than a state school.

Johns is #1 in biomed; however, for overall engineering, UT=#10 and JHU=#24. And there are just as many state school as private school on the top 50 list.

and thats with US news' crappy ranking system that will take a lesser private school over a public school.

fscking snob. :|

Eh, so which schools shouldn't be placed where?

Besides, this is just 1 opinion of how schools rank based on certain criteria.

i'm certainly no expert, but i think JHU is recognized to be one of the leaders in biomedical engineering... i know UT has good EE, CS, CE, ME, but i've heard a lot more about biomedical engr developments coming from JHU than UT.

life's unfair.
there's no 1 way of judging intelligence/capacity for intelligence.

does it really matter which school you get your masters or phd from?
