DVDs also suck because of:
1. bad compression. Watch them on a very good TV and you will see what I mean (especially dark areas!!)
2. bad resolution.

the compression problem is all but gone. mpeg2 encoders are much better and you'd be hard pressed to find any major recent release (last couple years) that has any artifacts. i've seen DVDs blown up to 100+ inches and they look fine if it's a good transfer.

as for the bad resolution....that's like saying VHS has bad resolution in 1988. it's the best available right now (and for quite sometime...don't think they won't milk DVD for all its worth. HD-DVD won't come out until HDTV has really penetrated the market.)
i don't see it as "bad" mainly because THERE'S NOTHING BETTER! (aside from D-VHS which is a waste of time and money.)

There still are good and not so good releases of movies on DVD. Like I pointed out in my post above, go to hometheaterspot.com to read reviews on individual DVD release video and audio quality. Granted, it's not as bad as it used to be, but they still compress some movies way too much so they can fit all the worthless extras on the disc.

I wonder if TDK will release some Armor Plated 52x CD-RW Disks. I know I would buy them after seeing what I do to my cd's.

Back them up? 😉

scratches don't matter one bit! I don't own any dvd's but every single one I rent from blockbuster looks like it was chewed up by a rabid dog and then dragged on the back of a car and then flushed down the toilet, but I've never had playback problems...
try doing the above to a vhs!

No more easily scratched than a CD. Whose fault is it that you cant take care of a DVD?

Guess you don't have kids.

And before you say "well they're fubared from Blockbuster" - I buy @$$loads of previously viewed DVDs from Blockbuster all the time and the few that are scratched - they work perfectly fine in either of my DVD players.

Just bought my first two previously viewed DVDs. Had to return spiderman twice before I got a playable one. Not good odds for me so far.
Evidently the COPY PROTECTION on Spiderman renders it unplayable in some DVD-ROMS and older players.

Huh ... hadn't heard of that. They have copy protection above & beyond standard DVD encryption?
In any case, I don't think that's it. The first two were visibly scratched & smudged and didn't work all the way through even after cleaning. Some parts would work, others wouldn't. The 3rd one works fine.

It could have been nice if they had made something similar to what Sony did with the Minidisc. But really, is it that hard to put the DVDs back in the case and not use 'em as buffing pads, coasters or frisbees? 😉

Sometimes playback is VERY player-dependent. I have an older standalone Sony DVD player that can read nearly anything a rental throws at it, but some players can't read a DVD if there is a smidge of dust. Go figure!

Handle your DVDs with care, injure anyone who chooses not to.

Pretty hard to do when my 4 year old son comes running in with his shrek dvd. you should see that thing i dont know how it still plays. Ill be buying a DVD-R soon and make copies of all my movies.

Back in the stone age when CDs first came out, several drives required the CD to be put in a carosel (sp?), which would then be inserted into the drive. That was a major pain in the @ss! Take care of your CD's/DVDs and they won't get scratched.

I dont like the current DVD cases. The little rounf knob that keeps the DVD secured to the case it kinda hard to push down and sometimes doesn't let the DVD go!

Agreed.

And who here wants to kidnap the CEOs of these companies and force them to open their product using only thier fingers... and they have to open 100 in an hour, or be brutally beaten. :|

The damn things require a sharp knife to open half the time... and don't even get me started on the three stickers covering the sides. :|

also agreed.. I hate DVD cases almost as much as I hate AMD retail CPU packages.

I make it a point to scratch up the disk as much as possible before giving it back to the person I borrowed the disc from.

dvd's rock i don't know what you're talking about, they don't degrade in quality after 30 views(like children like to do with their newest tape!)

seems cheaper plays suck with scratched dvds. my sony never had a problem with rentals, even totally f*cked up ones🙂 only when theres a crack did it fail hehe.

as for cases, just take the disc out once and then squeeze the holders down a bit to losen em.

as for resolution, yea it sucks compared to hdtv, but with new tech only barely able to hold a full quality hdtv movie, i'd rather they work on it a little longer. i want hdtv movie +alt audio tracks + special features. thats 50+gb atleast.

we did that cartridge thing with CDROMS remember? Pure hell. And what was the N64's biggest problem? Catridges.

OK, OK, those examples had nothing to do with the proposed idea. 😉

But seriously, I think they DO come with special plastic protective things. They're called BOXES!!! When you put the disc in the box, they (gasp!) don't get scratched! Holy moly! Someone call the New York Times! What an incredible idea!

Edit: Lonyo beat me to it

i think dvds suck because you can't always fast forward through those warnings. i've seen them a thousand times, i don't need to see them again, DUMBASSES

not nearly! 5 megabits for Dolby Digital/DTS Track, 25 megabits for Video streams. 13,500 megabytes per hour = easily able to fit on a blue laser disc. oh, and the bitrates i allotted are just overkill, so you could probably fit a LOT more. 😀
