Why don't you own a mac?

I own a PC because I can do more with it for cheaper than I could with a Mac.

I also can't play my games on a Mac.

I would love to have one. Don't have the cash and cannot justify the expense at this time. I may get an Apple in a few years, but not right now. I have nothing against Macs, I think they are great computers that fill the market they were designed for.

It's always useful to pick out one sentence of a paragraph and refute it, rather than looking at the argument as a whole.

I am simply stating that most people don't buy Apple for common reasons. Apple fits a certain segment of the population. Your question was to the population of AT about why they don't buy Apple, and I pointed out several common reasons. Why can't you get that most people won't buy Apple because it's simply not a good buy for most people?

About my point on cultive personality, Apple users don't seem to understand basic economics as it pertains to computers. All they knoww is Apple isn't big bad Microsoft and they feel warm and fuzzy about belonging to a minority group that gets to rail against the majority. Another thing I have noticed is many Apple users don't even take advantage of the main multimedia features, they buy it because it "looks cool" and comes with software out of the box. But if they spent any time configuring a Dell box with Windows XP, and bought the software they needed, it would still cost them less and they would get more bang for their buck. Plus, there is plenty of free software out there that buying a Mac for it's software isn't even a good decision anymore.

Most Apple users aren't very savvy computer users, however some are.

What does that have to do with anything? Who makes more money, ferrari or chevy?

Most PC users aren't very savvy either. Actually, I'd bet that the average mac user knows more about his or her machine than the average PC user.

There are millions of people out there with PCs who can't do anything but check thier email. It seems that for the most part, mac users have some reason for choosing the system they did, and are capable of utilizing the machine beyond opening and closing outlook and IE.

eh, the closest choice to my situation is that they are too expensive. but i'm broke anyway so it doesn't matter if they are $500 or $5000, i can't afford it.

I dislike anything that's so proprietary.

However, I could get over it if the price was right, unfortunately, that's not the case with Mac's.

The Powerbooks look great & I envy them, and to be honest, I like the looks of Apple products, always have... Just too cheap & thick headed to buy one.

They are incredibly expensive. Even if they were cheaper, there is still the problem of them being more proprietary than normal PCs and not having most games.

If they move to PC hardware, I'd check them out. But that's not gonna happen...

I've heard that 4 or 5 times on this thread. Mac's aren't so proprietary. There are only 2 major differances, 1 it isn't x86, and 2 you have to use MacOS or PPC operating system.

Sure northbridge/southbridges aren't x86 compatable but you need a diffrent northbridge for nearly every processor anyway. Graphics chips are the same as PCs, RAM, hard drives, CD/optical drives are all the same. PCI/AGP cards is a little tricky but many out there are PC/Mac compatable (or can be flashed as such).

Expense and proprietary parts = bad idea. I mean if you think Microsoft is a monopoly check out Apple. They leave little room for competition and most of the hardware advancements come from them, unlike on the PC. I like to think things become faster and cheaper because PC manufacturers have a lot of competition, the only thing that'll lower Apple's prices are poor sales.

Yeah, if Apple didn't make both the computers AND the operating system then I would be more intrigued. If more companies were building the hardware and the prices came down and they became competitive with PCs then I would definately take a second look at the Mac. If the Mac operating system worked on the PC for instance, that would be cool. Then people would have a real choice between Windows and OS X.

Apple did license out thier hardware for a period of time... Then the companies started making cheaper, inferior hardware, and undersold apple. then apple shut them down. At least that what I think happened.

Price and it's Slow

Slash the price by about $300 starting add faster RAM (DDR PC2100 at least) and graphics card then I'll buy one.

333mhz DDR is too slow so you want 266mhz?

bent over a barrel without lube. totally 0wned. 😉

i want a mac.

Actually I wasn't totally pwn3d (only partially and he did use lube thank you very much) I was referring to the iMac and iBook. I guess I should have made that clear in my initial post.

But then, Ferrari does not just make prettier cars, they are faster too 😛

If I would get a few million dollars all of a sudden I probably still wouldn't waste it on a Mac. I simply do not need one.

The last four options... Macs don't run the good games out there... they're waaaay too expensive... you can't really tweak or upgrade the system... and i hate those darn mac commercials with some random guy/girl giving reasons why they switched to mac...

the only decent thing about them is the sleek look and design... that's IT.

Two reasons:
Expense
One button mouse on Laptops. I know I can add a USB mouse but if I'm going portable I'd like 2 buttons on the laptop itself.

I won't seriously consider a desktop Mac until the price/performance ratio is close to a PC, or I can build my own PPC system, or I can use OSX on an x86 machine. As for the laptop, I'm not looking for the pure strength that I am in a desktop, so the battery life, text readability and flat-out coolness are the reasons why I'm hoping to be able to afford a 12" Powerbook at the end of summer. Write papers, take notes, watch movies and listen to music...with style. 🙂

I own one.

I am also trying to convince my boss that my new laptop at work should be the 15.2" Powerbook.

And to think, a couple of years ago I used to bash Macs without knowing a damned thing about them.
