why don't we have cameras replacing side view mirrors yet?

I'd say that this would definitely be standard eventually on all cars. It's just much safer any way you look at it. It'd be cool if it could be integrated into the rearview mirror for a 270° view or so. Turning your head, especially all the way around to check for blindspots is just stupid and unsafe. Technology FTW.
And a camera with LCD DOESN'T cost as much the mirror with a motor built into it. That whole system easily costs $200 to get replaced.

I'd say the most difficult issue is probably getting a camera that works well at night.

Where did you get that info from? lol

LCD Screen.
Cameras

vs.

piece of glass
a couple small electric motors + linkage

Do you also agreed that digital cameras cost less than film cameras?

It wouldn't be safer. Young people who watch Pimp My Ride too much just think more gizmos and rotating beeping flashy things for no reason would be more "cool". No camera or LCD will ever have the resolution, clarity, response time, viewing angle, and frame rate of... well... real life. :awe:

typical LCD camera/monitor <<<< high definition <<<<<<<<<<<< 35 mm film <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< real life reflection in a mirror.

Try taking a picture at night with your CMOS/CCD digital camera in your best cell phone, and tell me again that muddy grainy streaked flickering mess that some consider to be an "image" is safer.

And what do blind spots have to do with it? A pinhole camera and a 6" LCD are going to have the same limitation of coverage, if not worse. Besides that the limitation of having to move your head is a limitation of the human forward facing stereoscopic eye's narrow field of view. HUD, LCD, mirror, or otherwise, you are going to have to rotate your head; and obviously any delay of waiting for a camera to pan or time lapsing a scrolling image so you don't have to move your head is out of the question for reasons I hope are obvious. Technology to improve and enhance things = Yes. Technology for the sake of technology just to bling out and "technologize" everything just because it would be cooler like a sci fi movie = No.

Same principle as people who think transparent Minority Report\Avatar monitors would be cool. WHY?! How are you supposed to see what you are trying to view when you reflect everything in front and see through to everything behind the damn screen? It's NOT cool.

all cars sold in the US have a convex passenger side mirror. that's why it says 'objects closer than they appear'

and if you adjust your mirrors properly you can mostly eliminate blind spots. there's a place a motorcycle might be able to hide with my car, but it's well behind me (not right next to me which is how most people set their mirrors)

Really? Did not know that. Thought the text was standard for all side mirrors.

Did some googling, and apparently, there are "aspheric" mirrors (was thinking of these). They are mostly flat, or somewhat convex for 2/3 of the mirror, then flare out at the ends.

I'd prefer my driver side to be convex actually. I'm short so my seat position causes most of my view to be blocked by the B-pillar.
