Why don't they just learn how to bench?

wtf, so we're SUPPOSED TO arch our backs off the bench?

During the bench (actually any lift) you want your body to be as tight as possible and most of the weight to be underneath the bar to create a good base to press from. This is best done with an arch in your back and upper back dug into the bench. The arch doesn't need to be excessive if your goal isn't powerlifting, but there should still be an arch. I generally recommend most people bench the way outlined in Starting Strength, unless they have a specific goal in mind that would require something different. But generally you'll have much more power with an arched back. Your ass should still remain on the bench though.
