I lived for 30 years in ussr, where we supposedly didn't have so called "free speech", but we had, i could talk to my friends about whatever we wanted to talk...we could not say anything on the street...but...who cares now, if someone says bad things about goverment today on the street, newspapers, internet? Does it change anything?
We had limited free speech....

What people in countries with so-called "free speech" are missing - free thinking...
Most do what "free speech media" tells them to do and to think...

It should also be noted that the above "freedoms" would also apply to virtually all dictatorships in the last several hundred years, substituting relevant religions of course.
