They have been using impalas for a long long time... at least in Canada. I very very rarely see a crown vic police car.

Hmm.

In Edmonton, it's all Crown Victorias.

in ny it's any car they can get. I've seen a nissan altima blacked out without an exhaust, that i thought was just someone's personalized car and then all of a sudden he flips on his police lights

impalas are faster, cheaper, and have similar room on the inside...so why not use Impalas? I'm sure they could make some package like the interceptor package on the crown vics too...

They do.

Actually, you're wrong. They do in fact have a similar package on the impalas.

I've seen a couple of PA State Police in Mustangs. They use a lot of Crown Vics, too. A lot of local police use Impalas.

Because the Impala just doesn't strike fear into the hearts of the populace, like what happens when you see this in your rearview mirror.

😕 um, so how is that wrong?

Crown Vics are also much bigger. They hold more stuff and are easier to live in for 12 hours at at time.

Also, if you put a cage in, the back seat of an Impala is non-existant.

They have police packages, but they're still essentially the same car. The interior is the major difference, making room for computers/gunracks/equipment/cages/etc.

Umm, not to mention everything from the tranny to suspension is heavy duty. More so than the one you buy at the dealer. The usually have a larger engine in the police packages as well.
Extra cooling aside, the Crown Vic police package sports a bone stock drive train -- tranny and engine. Popular Science did a test drive a year or two ago (thank-you, Hot Deals) and confirmed this. There seems to be a lot of misinformation out there regarding this fact.

Edit: Official Ford Spec Page.
Look under "Major Standard Features" for the HP rating, then relentlessly scan and click "Major Optional Features" and "Optional Packages" for any engine performance upgrades.

impalas are used a lot, however, they are FWD... != as good as RWD.

Chargers are the new hip cop car.

whats the advantage of the Chargers over the Crown Vic?

Impalas are not the greatest cars reliability wise, also FWD not really preferred by most departments. However, NYC uses Impalas

why are fwd = bad for a police car?

only FWD and no v8 option
Actually now the Impala SS offers the 5.3L V8.

V6 Impala's are generally used for patrolling purposes, as they are smaller (i.e. easier to maneuver) and get better gas mileage; also the V6 Charger is now being used for this. For highway purposes, the Crown Vic and V8 Charger are employed; but mainly the Crown Vic.

One of the links in my previous post explains that Power is not much of a consideration for large city PDs. They just don't need it, so that in itself won't make/break which vehicle is chosen.

I know a lot of cops HATE the charger. Lots more blind spots. But an assload more power than the Crown Vic.

Unibody vs. Body on Frame. The Crown Vic is the last car (save it's company sister like the Grand Marquis) to have a body on frame design.
Way more durable. Crown Vics have less drivetrain trouble then Impalas.
