why don't police use impalas instead of crown vics?

Crown Vics are also much bigger. They hold more stuff and are easier to live in for 12 hours at at time.

Also, if you put a cage in, the back seat of an Impala is non-existant.

Umm, not to mention everything from the tranny to suspension is heavy duty. More so than the one you buy at the dealer. The usually have a larger engine in the police packages as well.

Extra cooling aside, the Crown Vic police package sports a bone stock drive train -- tranny and engine. Popular Science did a test drive a year or two ago (thank-you, Hot Deals) and confirmed this. There seems to be a lot of misinformation out there regarding this fact.

Look under "Major Standard Features" for the HP rating, then relentlessly scan and click "Major Optional Features" and "Optional Packages" for any engine performance upgrades.

Actually now the Impala SS offers the 5.3L V8.

V6 Impala's are generally used for patrolling purposes, as they are smaller (i.e. easier to maneuver) and get better gas mileage; also the V6 Charger is now being used for this. For highway purposes, the Crown Vic and V8 Charger are employed; but mainly the Crown Vic.

I know a lot of cops HATE the charger. Lots more blind spots. But an assload more power than the Crown Vic.

Unibody vs. Body on Frame. The Crown Vic is the last car (save it's company sister like the Grand Marquis) to have a body on frame design.
Way more durable. Crown Vics have less drivetrain trouble then Impalas.
