I should have expected this type of response. I'm not really complaining, like I said, I appreciate free bagels. This is just a trend I've noticed.
Guess you don't know much about office politics. The assortment isn't designed to please you - it's designed to please someone higher-up in the political spectrum. Bosses generally like an interesting assortment of things (that's what they get for THEIR bosses). Get with the program.

Hmm, I've never considered the political ramifications of bagel selection. :p
EVERYTHING in the office is political.

It's like pizza. Cheese and Pepperoni are your safe ones, but they always order pineapple/bacon/mushroom, or sante fe chicken. Get it right. you get like 2 cheese pizzas, and 8 pepperoni, and your set.
You know what I say? I say FVCK people who are picky eaters! Don't like the free food I bring you? Go buy your own meal.

;)

I'm a contractor in the office. I believe there's a list of people (everyone in the office is assigned a specific week). I just started a month ago, so I'm not on the list (at least yet). I may or may not be on the list depending on how long I stay on the project.

Apparently I'm coming across as an ungrateful prick. As I said before, I appreciate free bagels, I just wondered if anyone else has encountered similar situations.

This thread has been a bit inspiring. Perhaps I will try one of the "weird" flavors next time ;)

I used to work shift work. Every now and then, one of us would run out and get a Lb. of gourmet coffee to enjoy during the shift. One time, we sent one of the guys from the team out to buy the coffee. He came back and indicated that he didn't know which flavor we'd all like, so he "put some beans of each flavor" into the bag. That was some of the shaittiest coffee I've ever consumed. WTF was he thinking? I mean hazelnut, Kona, chocolate raspberry, cinnamon, etc. all mixed together tastes like ass.

second!

I would think poppy or sesame seed would be a much better safe choice.

But people's strange assumption that 'one of everything' will make everyone happy is kind of strange.

To be fair, they make the same mistake about themselves:

I remember a (chocolatey!) study where people had to choose in advance a candy bar for the next 5 days ('afternoon snack'). In general they chose 3-5 different types of candy bar. Another group chose their candy bar each day at 'snack time'. Most chose the same bar every day; almost none chose 3 different bars in five days.

I always liked the odd flavored donuts. I dont' care too much for normal glazed and chocolate ones. I like sourdough, cake, crulluers (sp?) and other things of the sort.

I'll third that. I think you are in the minority here. Cinnamon raison is not a standard normal bagel that everyone likes. In fact, I can honestly say in all the times I've gone to bagel shops I've never seen someone order one.

But I agree with your overall point. It should be mostly safe items with a few lesser eaten ones to please as many people as possible.

Favorite for me: Jalepenio bagel with garlic cream cheese. Most places won't serve anything like that, so I usually get the everything bagel with veggie cream cheese (JDub02 has good taste).

Cin/rasin is very popular here.

What's your problem? Either expand your horizons and try something new, bring the flavors you like or shut the hell up. Nobody owes anyone free bagels or donuts, if you don't like the flavors offered crawl back to your cubicle and cry yourself to sleep.

Werd.
It's easier for someone to walk into a bagel/donut shop and say "give me a box of assorted", than walk in and pick out specific types during rush hour.

I agree w/ OP, it's nice when there are more safe flavors than the less popular varieties and it depends who brings 'em what you get. But, no complaints from me, I like to try new stuff, 'specially when I'm not paying. What's worse is the a-hole who brings in grocery store bagels instead of bagel-shop bagels. Cheap bastage!

In the office where I'm working, every Friday one person brings in bagels and donuts for the entire department. This type of thing occurs in almost every office I have worked, with varying regularity.

What always baffles me is the selection of bagels and donuts. While everyone has different tastes, there are certain "safe" flavor choices that will likely be enjoyed by everyone. For bagels, plain and cinnamon raisin are "safe" choices. For donuts, glazed and chocolate covered are "safe." Inevitably, however, the people who supply the donuts and bagels select a sampling of every single flavor offered. This results in about 4 "safe" bagels and 4 "safe" donuts, which are immediately the first ones consumed. What remains are 44 bizarre flavors, many of which are unidentifiable by sight alone, resulting in a bunch of people standing around going, "What's that one?" "I dunno, it kinda looks weird."

Why do people order "one of everything" in this situation? Can't they use a little more discretion?

Of course, a free bagel is a free bagel. :)

dude... you eat doughnuts... how can you complain about other people...??? :disgust:
