Why don't more African Americans play Hockey?

I was thinking about it yesterday and I noticed virtually no people of African American race play Hockey. They are well and equally represented in every other team sport, except hockey. Why is this?

Chris Rock covered this in an SNL sketch, "The Dark Side With Nat X." He had a Top 5 list, "because the man won't let a brother have a whole Top 10 list."

It also had Kevin Bacon appearing as Vanilla Ice. :p

This is generalizing, but aside from cultural/fad differences, there's the cost thing. You can't exactly put on a shirt and find a ball to play ice hockey.

I'm glad I didn't have to say this.

It's an expensive sport to play. Skates, stick, ice rink time aren't cheap. The fact is blacks as a group tend to have a lower socioeconomic status than other races.

There's not much encouragement either from their peers. There has been success promoting lacrosse recently in Harlem, though. Charitable programs such as that would be a good start.

Glad I didn't have to get into the specifics;).

Found a transcript of the SNL sketch.

All right now, it's time for the Top 5. Why 5? 'Cause 10 would make the Man nervous. Tonight's the Top 5 Reasons Brothers don't play hockey. Reason #5: It's cold out there; Reason #4: They scared to get their gold tooth knocked out; Reason #3: Don't want to be around white guys with sticks; Reason #2: Don't want to be around a white guy with a mask; and the #1 Reason Black Guys Don't Play Hockey: Don't feel the need to dominate yet another sport. And that's the Top 5 - that's all I could get from Whitey at this time.

Chris Rock is funny, but I find it rather disturbing that people are taking a comedian's jokes as gospel truth on how society functions.

A lot of black people play football...isn't that an expensive sport?

Most black teenagers wouldn't be caught dead riding around town in the back of their mom's minivan.

In general black folks don't like water, almost as much as they don't like cold.

Ice? It's like a double whammy of do not want.

They never make it through the process.

Hockey people take stuff too literal. Black people keep talking about axing people and the hockey decision makers figure they're ax murderers.

Hockey is an expensive sport. I believe white people have the privilege of inheriting some $ from grandparents to afford the sport, black people for decades where slaves and inherited nothing. It will just be matter of time before black people start playing hockey.
there are no hockey rinks around black communities either.

Around here, the leagues for football provided the equipment.

The leagues for hockey did not provide your equipment.

All it takes is a ball.

I think it's a cultural thing, hockey just isn't big in black culture.
