Why don't mechanics work on Sundays?

I can't think of any reason why they would take Sunday off. Seems like you could get a good deal more business if people know you'd get their cars to them a day early, and possibly do a whole job within a weekend, a huge boon to convenience. So what's the deal?

Edit: Actually, don't most take Saturdays off too?

Because the typical person only works 5 days a week. Most places are small shops and thus can only afford to hire one shift of full time mechanics. Many dealerships will do work on Saturdays, but even then they only do small jobs that don't require so much expertise (oil changes, etc).

Because they are making $65 hr Mon-Fri.

Knock them down to $5.15 hr and watch how fast they start working Sat & Sunday's.

Of course I am against this $5.15 hr BS, no more minimum wage below poverty level.

Mechanic's don't make $65/hr. The shop does. They make from $14 to $26. or thereabout.

It depends on the kind of mechanical work you need done. If it's brakes/suspension work, some tire/alignment/brakes places will do it.

I wish barber shops and mechanics would close on tuesday and wednesday and open on saturday and sunday. 9 to 5'ers can't get squat done otherwise

Because they'd like to get a least one day off out of the week? Some do open on Saturdays if you look hard enough.

Because many people work M-F and have the weekend off. Therefore, they must do things like get their car worked on during the weekend, if at all possible. It is a very big inconvenience for most to arrange for rides to/from work when the car is in the shop.

That being said, at my current job I work rotating weekend shifts (I work one weekend, then have two off) and I actually enjoy the times when I work the weekend; I have Thursday and Friday off those weeks, and it's much more enjoyable to go around doing things during the mornings/afternoons when there is nobody around compared to the weekends. If I could have weekdays as my 'weekend' all the time I'd do it, except for the whole 'all of my friends hang out Friday and Saturday night and I have to get up for work the next day' thing.

So I suppose having a rotation is pretty good to keep the balance :)

I agree...some businesses should be open on weekends, and pick 2 weekdays to be off, car stuff & barber shops are big ones.

Another thing I hate is the Post Office....us 9-5'ers can barely get something shipped, and we hafta make special arrangments! Stay open 'til 6!
