Why don't Indians eat pork?

I'm indian and I know that there are lots of hindus (not muslims) that don't eat pork because of muslim influence in india.

From my chats with an Indian colleague (well technically he's Sri Lankan but from the Tamil community) it's more of a cultural thing. Apparently Indians traditionally categorise certain animals as filth e.g. dogs. Likely pigs fall into that category as well.

I have a hindu friend that doesnt eat pork.

Also i have a few muslim friends. One of them told me they dont eat pork since its a dirty animal because it eats garbage/scraps. They will eat fish, but not any bottom feeding seafood like oysters or clams i suppose.

Most/all of my indian friends are vegetarians. And from what they eat, hell yeah it's good to be vegetarian.

If it weren't for the fact I was raised on excellent Korean food, being completely vegetarian and eating Indian food would keep me completely happy.
