I thought it was because of Hindu, but I might be wrong. I was in a meeting at work the other day and got to know this woman who was a Christian missionary to the United States from India... She said she was here as a ministry to Indians in the states.

Regardless, pork barbeque sandwhiches were catered, but she said her family did not eat pork. Even though she wasn't Hindu.

So is not eating pork kind of a culture thing, like they just don't like it, or what? Or am I making up the fact that people practicing Hindu don't eat pork...

If purely according to religion, Hindus don't eat beef and Muslims don't eat pork..

Dude!

Not all Indians are Hindu.

Maybe she just doesn't like pork?

You realize that not everybody around the world shares our culture.

DUDE!

I was asking the question ABOUT the culture. I don't think there's any shame in that. I don't know everything, nor do I pretend to, but your answer doesn't help me understand any more.

Hindi is the national language of India, not a religion.

I think you are thinking of Muslims in general and not Indians. However I think historically it originated with trichinella in pork products. Of course they did not know about trichinella but rather that it would be easy to get sick from eating pork so therefore they thought it was 'wrong' to eat pork. Became mainstreamed into their society and culture and religion.

I had two roomates in college from India. They were from the southern region and were vegetarians. They told me it was quite common for people from their part of india to be vegetarian.

Questions Answered:

Question:

Why is the eating of pork forbidden in Islam?

Answer:

The fact that consumption of pork is prohibited in Islam is well known. The following points explain various aspects of this prohibition:

1. Pork prohibited in Qur?an

The Qur?an prohibits the consumption of pork in no less than 4 different places. It is prohibited in 2:173, 5:3, 6:145 and 16:115.

"Forbidden to you (for food) are: dead meat, blood, the flesh of swine, and that on which hath been invoked the name of other than Allah." [Al-Qur?an 5:3]

The above verses of the Holy Qur?an are sufficient to satisfy a Muslim as to why pork is forbidden.

2. Pork prohibited in the Bible

The Christian is likely to be convinced by his religious scriptures. The Bible prohibits the consumption of pork, in the book of Leviticus

"And the swine, though he divide the hoof, and be cloven footed, yet he cheweth not the cud; he is unclean to you".

"Of their flesh shall ye not eat, and their carcass shall ye not touch, they are unclean to you."
[Leviticus 11:7-8]

Pork is also prohibited in the Bible in the book of Deuteronomy

"And the swine, because it divideth the hoof, yet cheweth not the cud, it is unclean unto you. Ye shall not eat of their flesh, nor touch their dead carcass."
[Deuteronomy 14:8]

A similar prohibition is repeated in the Bible in the book of Isaiah chapter 65 verse 2-5.

it is like she said in the beginning her family doesnt eat pork.

I am from an indian home and we grew up eating chicken/fish/duck. Just about anything except pork and beef.

It is just the way we were raised. My parents were raised that way too. My grandparents eating NO MEAT at all.

i never ate lamb until like last year or so... pork doesn't taste much different from chicken. why don't you just give it a try for the sake of having a little variety.

Hell, I don't eat pork and I am neither Hindu or Muslim. Has nothing to do with my religion.

Not all Indians are Hindu.
Apparantly there were a significant number of Jewish settlements in India way back in the day and there are still some Jewish communities.

The cow is considered Holy by Hindus, that's why Hindus don't eat beef pork is generally looked down upon by Hindus as well now with regards to your friends, most Christians and Muslims in India were originally Hindus who were converted into either Islam or Christianity so it might well be a case where her forefathers might have been Hindu and the culture of not eating Pork might have continued.
