I remember back in elementary/grade school everyone either road a bike or walked to school, many walking over a mile.

Now no child walks to school, in fact I am sure if a school found out a child was walking to school alone they would complain.

What happen?

Some school districts forbid it, believe it or not.

The high school up the road from me would be difficult to walk to as there are no sidewalks for the kids.

Not only that, but younger kids can't wait at the bus stop by themselves, either. Or be let off the bus by themselves.

A parent or guardian has to put them on the bus, and take them off the bus.
Didn't you know? Child-rapists and kidnappers are the greatest menace to children in 2013. There is one rapist/kidnapper per 12 children, so the odds are really stacked against you and you need to keep your eye on kids all the time!

I know why I didn't or my nephews. The school was easily 10 miles away lol. That would make for a long walk.

I just realized this might be one of the few threads where "because you touch yourself at night" is a valid answer.

My kid rode his bike last couple for years of elementary, and rides his bike to middle school. We have volunteer crossing guards at every intersection till you get to the main entrance to the sub divisions. Lots of kids here walk and ride bikes.

ummm, when I was in high school, you live within 2 miles of the school, no bus for you..and we went to a rich high school....eden prairie in Minnesota. So those people walked/biked/drove ... nothing wrong with that.

Holy Crap! I know a guy from there--are you that guy?

:hmm:

Helicopter parents.

Fuck that shit man. I don't care what anyone says, I've just seen too much shit on the news, the internet and what not, to even feel safe in my own home, let alone let my 5 and 8 year olds walk to school by themselves.

Edit: I guess I should clarify, I grew up in a pretty rough part of San Diego, so I don't trust anyone. Even when we moved to a nicer neighborhood, I still hold on to the distrust.

Parents need an excuse for getting to work late and skipping out early so they drive their kids to/from school even though the schools is close enough to walk to or there is a bus.

No longer safe in your neighborhood. :(

Kids/Teens until grade 12 in my area still enjoy walking/biking to and from the school. There are options for Parents/relatives who wish to drop them off/pick them up too, in some instances the drive around area gets packed. Bus is provided for kids living > 1 mile.

Nothing. What you are saying simply isn't true.

They still walk to school here. Up to 1 mile for the elementary students, 1.5 miles for the secondary students.

On my way to campus I see kids walking to the nearby elementary school all the time, and it's not even a particularly great area.

What happened?

Well, a number of things.

When I was a kid I walked or rode a bike to school often. But I couldn't anymore. I suppose my answer is strongly influenced by my age and where I grew up.

In some places I couldn't really ride my bike on the road because it was too busy and there were no sidewalks. However, I could ride through the woods behind my house until I got to the next neighborhood and then ride on their streets until I reached the woods on the following side and continue on to school.

There are no woods now, no empty lots etc. No real way to ride a bike. Can't ride through everyone yards even if you wanted to, too many fences etc. So, kids get driven to school.

At another place the roads were gravel. I.e., few cars and they were going pretty slow. You can also hear a car on gravel about half mile away. So, it wasn't dangerous at all. Now those gravel roads are paved with a ton of fast moving traffic and no sidewalks. So, kids get driven to school.

I don't even need to consider the 'danger' from nuts etc., there's just no feasible way to do it.

Went past my elementary school today on my morning ride. Man, that bike rack they have out front used to be packed when I was a kid. Now there's maybe ten bikes if that locked up. Don't really see that many kids taking the bus to school anymore. Their parents pick them up and drop them off.
