Let's not forget the millions who died before car seats for small children were mandated. Oh wait...

when, in the 40's?

crime rates have been falling since the 90's... if I was safe to walk to school then, my kids would probably be fine today.

(obviously, unless you're living in like Detroit or something, in which case bar your windows and home school until the full-body kevlar gets delivered)

10-20 years ago it was much safer. Sure, there was the oddball incidents but it was not like today where that's all you hear about. Now we seem to have murders every couple years here, more child rapists etc... I don't buy into this "more reported" bs. People say that because they want to feel safer and are in denial that things have been getting worse. What would make news agencies not want to report on it before? If it happens, it gets put to the public, as simple as that. Especially high profile incidents like murders and rapes etc.

statistics disagree with you, as far as I'm aware.

violent crime rates peaked in the 90's and have falling since then (more or less, depending on your specific city)

No, it wasn't. In 2010 violent crime in all aspects in the US was the lowest it's been since the late 60s-70s (depending on the type of crime). Unless you're over 60 and were actually a child before 1970, you're wrong when you say "back in the day" it was safer than it is now.

Hell, we haven't even got past the "you HAVE to go to college to be successful" crap and it's been 50 years. It's pathetic how sheltered the 'youts' of America are. You can't ride your bike anywhere, you can't draw a picture of a knife let alone a gun, you can't go to the park because it's the last one in America without that foam crap under the swings/monkey bars. Oh yeah, these same kids HAVE to have $400 phones, a car at 16 and, of course Mom and Pops have to pay for a college education. What is this a third world country? Now, they've graduated college and, of course Mom and Pops should let them live with them till they've saved enough cash to buy a house. Fuck all the over privileged, self entitled, 'youts' in America.

Must have something to do with all of the dangerous, knife wielding, ten year olds.

4th through 8th grade the school was 5.1 miles from home by foot. The high school was slightly closer at 4.7

Yeah, pretty much back in the day it was worse. The early 80's was the peak of crime in america. It's been falling since then. America's actually been getting safer but people have been becoming more fearful.

Helicopter parents. Hell, they can't even let their kids walk to the neighborhood bus stop. They have to drive them down in their suburban assault vehicles and sit there and coddle them until the bus comes.

It's definitely just because things have become more reported. This is because crimes of all types have been falling since their peak in the early 80's. Crime has fallen a lot since then. Crimes that used to be just reported in local news is now picked up and reported across the country.

Because the media scares the shit out of the average Joe. Pushing stories of kidnapping and rape towards children as if it was an every day occurrence. Fact is, the odds of your child being raped or kidnapped on their way to school are relatively slim to none, but the government wants you to be scared and feel helpless. I remember when I was going to elementary school, and even high school. The streets in the morning were FLOODED with children walking to school. I look outside now in the morning and at the end of school, you see a few kids walking but not nearly as much as their use to be. Sad really, but oh well.

It's something like 1.5 miles here. If you live inside that distance, no bus for you.

Meh, had the mugging going on since back when I was in elementary school. You just gotta pair up with a buddy that lives close to you.

... you can't go to the park because it's the last one in America without that foam crap under the swings/monkey bars. ...

Non-pussy parks still exist. Here are my kids playing not far from our house.

Not only is there dirt instead of foam crap, but you know what's in that dirt? Lots of rusty nails. That's what. Kids can build their own play structures there and they drop nails everywhere. End result: my kids play on nails and will grow up strong and tough (or at least smart enough to look out for hazards and avoid them). :colbert:
