Why doesn't the US have a $1 coin still in production?

We have $1 coins. All you have to do is go to the bank and ask for them. I believe they are the Susan B. Anthony $1. They may not be in "production", but they are certainly still in circulation.

BTW, what rock did you crawl out from under?

I was wondering the same thing. Smacking someone upside the head with a roll of dollar bills doesn't have quite the same effect as a sack one dollar coins does.

Bring back Susan B. Anthony and Sacajawea!

i'm guessing it'd be cheaper to make the coins.. they're made of cheap metal.. probably less than the special ink that they make the bills from.. i dunno.. you have either cheap metal which they can get huge sheets of, and make one impression for the coin, or continually use expensive special ink for the bills.. not sure which would be more expensive

Well another reason is the coins last longer then the bills so this way the economy keeps going better :D

i never even cared to use them... bills are smaller, easier, and lighter to carry

And I like the smell of new paper bills better than the smell of a roll of coins.

Nah, but I had a major problem with the Mimiograph machine in grade school. Had to have an intervention and everything. Yep, locked myself in copy room and wouldn't let anyone in. Fire Department had to come in and break the door down. I just loved the way that purple ink smelled.

I'm much better now. ;)

So that explains it.

You sniffed stuff when you were young :D

Kinda better then eating glue I suppose.

Well, it is cheaper to produce metal coins rather than paper bills. Coins have a lifespan of many years, whereas paper has an average lifespan of 3 months.

I think the only reason you don't see dollar coins being used more often is because people are too stupid and think that those dollar coins are "special" or "limited edition." This means that they'd rather hoard them thinking that they'll go up in value in a few years instead of circulating them.

Excatly why they do it more then likely.

This way we spend the money faster since it eventually is ruined faster.

They don't produce dollar coins because people don't use them. Brings to mind a quote from the Simpsons.

"Its a Sacajewa dollar coin. You can exchange it at the bank for a real dollar."

People don't like to carry a pile of change with them. Paper bills take up much less space and cost less to print. Also, they are harder to counterfeit than coins.
