Why does Win. XP think my new network card is the same as the old one?

I took out a broken Realtek card and put in a new D-Link but it still thinks the Realtek is installed..

How do I get it to recognize the D-Link one as what it really is?

dont worry,, no problem here. I have a dlink dfe530tx+ and mine was detected as a realtek as well (even though i never had a realtek card).. I just downloaded xp drivers from www.dlink.com

Well, I have the same card as you do.

I downloaded the drivers, extracted them.. but now what do I do?

I'm not really sure about those particular cards, but different manufacturers use the same chip on their cards sometimes. I would say that as long as it is working well not to worry about it.

Edited better grammar

Its more the principle of the thing at this point..

I have one network connection and because I have swapped things in the past it is listed at Network Connection #6.. but I cant figure out how to it let me view the other 5.

oh im sorry, goto NICs properties in device manager, goto the driver tab, click update driver and in the next window goto select from list, then dont search, then goto "have disk". locate the folder that you extracted to and goto the winxp folder within the folder you extracted to and select the NETDLKR5. then ok, next, then click continue if it gives any warning, then reboot.

oh in your concern why it says #5, #6 etc in network connections, it seems to do for some odd reason (think because things arnt cleard from registry), you can just right click and rename them to what ever you want. And as far as it detecting card as realtek isnt because of your old card, this did the same for me on both my systems i installed this card in (in which they never had realtek before)
