<< uh when calculating food statistics about 2 billion in aid to israel should be removed from those calculations. >>

You mean along the same lines as England gives aid to South Africa and they buy their goods and military weaponry?????;)

Ok, I had some inspiration in the shower on this argument :) Lets say we do actually give 4 billion dollars worth of food aid to foreign countries. How much is that? Well, I know of college students who have survived on 3 meals a day of Ramen noodles at $.50 each, or $1.50/day. I'm sure the US Government, buying in bulk, without paying advertising or any food processing could come up with a large amount of satisfying food for a person for $1/day. Now, lets say you are a farmer in Zimbabwe. You have a cow and some chickens, or maybe you get some food from your corrupt local gov (i know nothing about the local govs. in Zimbabwe) for 165 days a year (less than half!). You rely on USA food aid for the other 200 days a year. So it costs the US government $200 to feed you for one year. 4 billion dollars ($4,000,000,000) divided by $200/per person/per year - means that 20,000,000 - 20 million people get to eat at our expense! That's a lot of people. Sure, you might say, why not xxx million people? Well, we have to pay for Social Security, Medicare and other programs which eat up the majority of our national budget, and people don't want to be taxed any more (fair enough).

I think the best observation out of all of this was

<< "only" $6 billion >>

I don't care if $6 billion is 50% or .00000000000001% of the total income, $6 billion in aid is $6 billion in aid.

There is no question about "it isn't as much as people think." I think its $6 billion in aid the world would have to go without if it wasn't for the US. Anyone here want to pony up $6 billion to make up for it?

Or the people that think we should just hand over $6 billion without some strings... probably the same people that complain that the world bank has strings on the loans it makes the governments.

You want $6 billion worth of aid from me, expect me to offer my opinion on your government/way of life/exports/treatment of women/whatever. If you want me to keep my nose out of your business, turn down any offers of aid the US makes. There are plenty of other people that would be willing to take that aid and the opinions that come with it.

Perhaps the US should go back to its strong stance of isolationism of the 19th century. Take our $6 billion in aid and put it back into America and let the rest of the world deal with their own problems. Would that make people happy that we aren't offering our opinion and playing big brother? Of course not, they want us to give and give and give, and never expect anything in return.

If we add to the figure the US citizens we feed with food stamps, and subtract them from the "per capita" side, I bet we move up a few places.

Agreed.

In this age, I hope you're kidding about that isolationism because thats an awefully stupid comment... Of course, stupidity hasn't stopped Bush's office from doing just that...

As for putting that 6 billion in aid back to America, I don't know that you can that that amount of grain, etc. and get 6 billion from it anywhere in America... With our surpluses, its worth next to nothing to us...

<< not every person outside of the US is out to get us. >>

It sure seems that way sometimes, and often seems like even a liberal quantity of dolts within the US are out to get us.

That portion was more in jest, a point that isolationism is no better of a soltuion that just throwing out aid in every direction. Neither one is a good solution.

<< we're treated like we're the devil? >>

porbaly because Your country (USA) is the most barbaric, violent and duplictious country in the world.

You said your war against terrorism is to protect democarcy. Well, did the US government treat the prisoners of Tal Liban or what you called "detainees" like human being?

When did you country ever feed millions? Do you mean the droppings of food in mind fields and missiles at Afganistan at the same TIME?

Do you know how much resources the US consumer per year?

The startospheric amount of pollution that your country produces is obscene.

Please Americans, stop posting these ignorant comments.

It surely doesn't feel like 50/50 to me.

i think you might have selective vision then. it's a lot closer to 50/50 than virtually everybody. take a gander at all those post 9-11 america posts, there are pretty hot debates going on in there, and it isn't one sided at all.

to the countries that do respect the US, we have to show an example of mercy and kindness. Also, the americans having such a nice lifestyle compared to most the world, we must show generosity to those in need. I agree with what other say.. feeding the terrorists is not a good idea.. thats just stupid, but feeding afghanies is cool with me.

<< cuz its just a cover so we can pimp their oil from them. oil makes the world go round and round. >>

If we stopped buying oil from them, they would have *no* source of income...Millions of people would die. Would you like that?

LOL... you actually think that the money we pay for their oil goes out to "millions" of their citizens?

If so, there's this bridge out on I57 I'd like to sell you... its pretty marvelous...
