Why does noone like the cryengine?

Ive heard many new games will use source or the doom 3 engine. Why not the one from farcry? Its got better visuals than source but dosent scale as well and is on par with doom 3 visually and scales better. Why isnt anyone developing games with it? Or are they and i just havent heard about it?

I am sure the game companies look at all the engines and pick the one that does everything they want it to do for the lowest price.

Because nobody is making singleplayer games with wide outdoor areas, they're all making ultra linear, scripted, on rails, indoor games.

I can barley think of any games at all that licensed something other than an id software engine.

I can't think of a huge number that are using the Doom 3 engine.
Sure, Q3 was very popular, but tbh Doom 3 doesn't seem so popular, or even close.
Unreal Engine 3, although it's not going to be used for a while, seems like the top dog at the moment.

Sorry, the cryengine is NOT onpar with the Doom3 engine. It does outdoor mappings very nicely but chokes horribly when it isn't doing shrubbery and water. Really, is it so hard to recognize each engines strengths?

I think the cryengine is still the most powerful engine out there and it looks great! Sure its got that glossy look on the characters like plastic but didnt doom 3? and that was able to be optimized for quake 4. It renders humongous enviroments with no choke and keeps just about everything looking pretty. I mean seriously name one thing wrong with cryteks engine?

Well apparently it chokes when not doing shrubbery and water 😕 Maybe somone just didnt like farcry hmm? I personally think its a great engine and cant really pick a fault with it.

Hmmm well how about all those amazing indoor enviroments in far cry? What about the tiki huts? What about all the labrotories? I personally think developers should use the engine over the doom 3 engine. It had the next best physics engine other source, and it already has HDR in it which probably can be tweaked better. just to add to the list of its superiority over id's engine.

I agree, it's a great Engine, but I think it's not being used much simply because it's so new and quite unknown(relatively speaking). It took quite sometime for the Unreal Engine to gain use by others, but it steadily has become one of the most used, if not the most used, engines around. If developement of the Cry Engine ontinues it will get used by others more.

Source engine FTW.

Anyways, I believe there's no point in debating on why one engine is better than the other. It all depends on the developer. As noted before, the major point is the price for the license of the engine. Developers would usually choose a larger company over a smaller one because the larger company can offer cheaper/discouts on their engine.

The original Serious Sam probably had the best engine for its time, able to render vast numbers of enemies onscreen at the same time while keeping framerates high. How many other games used it? None.

2 things about far cry. 1) no one saw it comming, they just came out of the blue. 2) you could (can) play the game any number of ways, wanna be rambo, well you can, want to stalk and sniper, well you can. Something in between? yes you can. The only comment against it at the time it launched was the checkpoint save system. It was and is unique in being open ended in how you complete the quests. Yes you gotta clear the camp you gotta beat the merc's before you can progress. But there are a lot of ways you might accomplish that. Yes the environments are lovely and you can use folage to your advantage but some if not a lot of the goodness of the game is its openess. Now on the subject of engine, do we know that its even on the market? If you accomplished what they accomplished would you be selling? I think I'd be developing another game and let my competion figure out how I did that.

Starbreeze was [almost] unknown until Universal/Vivendi used them to make Chronicles of Riddick:EfBB

Who knows? . . . as long as there is a FC II - i really don't care if other games use the engine 😉

perhaps their price is too high or the learning curve too steep or their support non-existant . . .

the main reason the Unreal [Warfare] Engine is so popular - despite it's high price for a license - is that it is constantly Updated; is easy to use and very well supported . . .
or so i read
Do we know they even sell their engine? 😛

I found this in a thread by jiffylube:

Here's a (surprisingly long) list of most of the games using the Unreal or Unreal 2 Engine (borrowed from the Unreal forums):

Unreal 1
Return to Na Pali (expansion pack for Unreal 1)
Adventure Pinball
Rune
Nerf Arena Blast
Wheel of Time
Deus Ex
Klingon Honor Guard
DS9: The Fallen
Unreal Tournament
Mobile Forces
Harry Potter and the Sorceror's Stone
America's Army
Undying
Raven Shield
Unreal 2
Unreal Championship
Splinter Cell
Deus Ex 2
Unreal Tournament 2003
Unreal Tournament 2004
Devastation
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
New Legends (XBOX)
Desert Thunder
XCOM: Enforcer
XIII
Magic: The Gathering Battlegrounds
TNN Pro Hunter
Thief: Deadly Shadows
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
Unreal Championship 2: The Liandri Conflict
Advent Rising
Pariah
Lineage 2
Dead Mans Hand
Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow
Raindow Six Athena Sword
Shadow Ops: Red Mercury
Tribes: Vengeance
Men of Valor
Brothers in Arms
Star Wars: Republic Commando
Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory

Pretty impressive eh? When a developer chooses to use the Unreal Engine technology, they get to use the most current build of the Engine available, so someone using the Unreal 2 engine in 2004 would have some improved features/graphics/etc. over someone using Unreal 2 technology in 2003.

Good question. Maybe they don't. :shrug; If they do, I suspect they'll do alright with it in time.

Ok, there are a bunch of unreal engine games that may see the light of day, but other than americas army, has there been any game at all that's used the unreal engine?

Check the post above that one, the longer list.

The most popular engine to license has been the unreal engine (its been that way for a long time) because they're easy to work with and very flexible. I like what ubisoft did with farcry and it would be nice to see some games use that engine (imagine fc2 in the swiss alps or something ooh la la) but I can only surmise that its expensive or difficult to work with or something.

Personally, I love outdoor stuff a whole lot more then indoor games. FC and HL2 were 2 of the best fps I've ever played (as far as single player goes that is).

There's also something to be said about the size of the Community with experience with an Engine. At one time the largest would have been the Doom/Quake Community, but over the years the Unreal Community has grown and matured. All that talent and the ease of availability of great Editing tools gives Developers a large pool of Talent to recruit from.

Hardly 2 weeks go by before someone is recruiting for paying(!) positions on various Unreal specific websites. Same is likely true on Quake/Doom sites as well, but I hardly visit those.

QFT!, it is to bad that the game industry is making games with such "railed" scripting. it seems that they developers are missing the proper balance between game play and graphics, sure great graphics make a game cool but great gameplay is what is going to keep me spending my money. the developers put alot of work into the games, but it is for the most part put into the wrong aspect, We have great graphics now we want the gameplay to come with it...thats just my 2 cents take it or leave it one thing is for sure, my 2 cents are going to be saved for a title that can keep my brain happy rather than just my eyes.
