why does my KT7 system only boot up 1 outta 3 times?

I purchased a Duron 650 and slapped it into a Abit KT7. Now for the life of me I can't understand why the machine only boots up maybe 1 out of 3 times.

When i hit the power button, it sounds like the fans and PS start up but no video and no post BEEP! It just sits there. Then i need to power off, try again until I get a flawless boot. It either will start and boot completely or not boot at all. It has the UL bios, is using pretty kosher components- a Diamond V770 TNT2 card at AGP X2, Duron 650@800 at 1.7v. Adding voltage doesn't make any difference.

Also when i get into my bios and then exit it- i get the same no post/no boot. I have an Addtronics 6896a with a 300W Addtronics PS, 1 HDD, 1 CD-ROM, sound and NIC, nothing really heavy.

Please I'm at my wits end.

It might be your power supply. Although you have a 300 w PS, I don't
see it listed on AMD's approved PS list. Since I've responded to post like yours a dozen times before, I'll
just give a LINK to a another forum where I (KTseven) responded.
I suggested the same thing to Rthur 's problem a week earlier, and it turned
out to be his power supply.

This happened to me before, if you're overclocking your Duron with the pencil method, you might want to try repenciling the bridges. When the bridges are done incorrectly this happens sometimes.

Hi:

I got the same experience as you have.

I even changed PS, but no vain.

BIOS is also UL.

ATI Xpert 98 AGP2 card. Even with Xpert 2000 Pro. 16MB AGP 4, the same.

It bothered me since month long.

Appreciate some one can help us.

Good Luck.

I'm having the same problem with the KT7-Raid MB/800 T-bird that I built last week. Also, I can't continute booting if I make changes to the BIOS. I need to shut the power down and start over.

I've got an Enlight 7237 case w/ a 300 Watt PS that came with the case.

Does ANYBODY have an answer to this?

I had the same problem if I set my fsb too high. When fsb clock is not overlclocked too much I did managed to make it boot by reducing the I/O voltage to 3.2V or set it over 3.4V. Using both reset button and ctl-alt-del keys "many times" can also wake up the system. There are lots of discussion at jc-news. Check it out.

Hope this help!

I had same problems too and solution for me was:

I changed the CPU fan cable next to the agp slot connector. (from Fan1/2 to Fan3 connector) This connector does not inform Fan RPM at all to BIOS and it helped.... Weird isn't??? There have been problems with some fans that peaks rhe rpm channel so that BIOS fails...

Check the site: http://go.to/kt7faq for lots of information about KT7 problems.

How about this...which has kept me amused (NOT!) for hours today... :(
ABIT KT7 RAID & Duron 700Mhz system:

I have been putting together a new system for my mate.

It has been the most unbelieveably troublesome PC build ever in my experience..

The system would boot/stall/reboot/hang/die.....or do nothing at all...
Then decide to either start or not with or without keyboard..absolutely terrible.

Well I could have been there for days trying to sort this one out...returning the motherboard seemed like a good option...if somewhat of a hassle..
However by accident I discovered the problem...an unbelievable one at that!
I tried booting without the fan connected...guess what, absolutely no problems!!!
I tried 3 different fans and all give the same result... the computer will not remain stable or operate at all..if you use a fan connected to the power supply!!!

Disconnect the fan and it's solid as a rock..what gives here???

I assume there is some sort of sensitivity to electromagnetic waves from the fan?

Now I know why I still have a PIII... :)

Anyone try simply unplugging the keyboard during these cold boots?

Hi:

It seems there are NO concrete answer for this problem.

I had tried those possibilities from all friends post here.
IN VAIN.

I got bigger Power supply: HiPro. 5V:~20A.....
Several CPU fans been tried. Connect or Not connected.
Even connected direct to Power Supply.
Lower 3.3V to 3.2V(CPU). increasing 1.525 to1.55V.

For those who only changed one component and then all OK, I would say: You are really Lucky. Congratulation.

And we have to keep Fighting.
Best Regards.
Good Luck to all.

Personally I'd try to get the system sorted first using only the VGA card.
Have u managed to load your OS yet?

I have 2 kt7 MBs with a t-bird 800 at 950 and a duron 600 at 1G and haven't seen any of these problems. I do use the Thermaltake C-orb for both. (Of coarse you have to grind a small portion of the sink off near the power caps)

At first I used the pencil method for the bridges, but that had intermittent results (hanging on boot, etc...). I went with the conductive pen and everything works great.

Good Luck.

Hey Guys! I got mine working...so far. What are your BIOS settings? I reviewed the manual carefully and changed a few of my BIOS settings in the Power Mgmt. area and in the PNP wake-up areas. Now I don't have to shut the power down after getting into the BIOS.

With these changes, it also fires up after shut downs without having to shut the power supply off and re-boot.

I am still freezing after a few hours. I think my CPU might be getting too hot. It gets up to 57C after being on for a while. I've got a CoolerMaster DP5-5H53-01 (from Mwave as part of CPU/MB kit). Is this temp too hot?

If anyone wants to know what my bios setting are, I'll look tomorrow.

Rong: I'll post my settings tonight when I get home. I'm in Mountain time, so it might be kinda late.

Rong: Here are the settings that got my system booting up properly. I'll list several screens worth of settings so you get an idea of my components, but I think what got me going was the Power Management Setup.

CPU Drive Strength=2
Enhance Chip Performance=Enabled
Forced 4-way Interleave=Disabled

PCI/VGA Palett Snoop=Disabled
Assing IRQ for VGA=Enabled
Assing IRQ for USB=Enabled
PIRQ_0 Use IRQ No.=Auto (Auto for IRQ's 1-3)

PC HEALTH STATUS
* I installed my HS/F on FAN2. Don't know if it makes any difference, but some people reported having problems when they connected fans to the correct spot.

Basically, I figured that the monitor going to sleep meant that the Power Management was not working properly, so I enabled most "Wake Up Events." Can't remember if I enabled any IRQ's or if they were already enabled. Finally, I made sure that my APM in Win98SE was enabled.

Hope this helps some of you. Unfortunately, I wasn't more scientific when I changed the settings (change one, test results, change next, etc.), but the ones above seemed to work for me.

I still have an occasional freeze where the keyboard and everything just freezes. Don't know what is causing that.

Let me know if this works for you.

BrotherMan: Yeah, I typed it manually (after transcribing from BIOS screens to paper). I've gotten a lot of good advice and info from the forums here and I wanted to give some in return.

I hope it helps some people. By the way, I still freeze randomly afer an hour or two (not consistent). If anyone has had this problem and solved it, I'd like to know.
